SCOTTISH SOCIETY'S ENTERTAINMENT
___-+ "GATHERING OF THE CLANS" HELD ! Every vcar, the Christchurch branch of the Scottish Society of New Zealand hold a "Gathering of the Clans evening; and last night when the thirty-fourth annual gathering was held in the Scottish Society's Hall, there was a very good attendance. The entertainment took the form of a concert, followed by a dance. As the members entered the hall they wero presented with a sprig of heather, which had been gathered in Scotland. . Welcoming those present, Chief G. M. Tel for expressed pleasure in seeing that so many still showed a lov'e for the song, poetry, habits, and traditions of the land of their birth. Although they were all very proud of this Dominion, the land of their adoption, it was indeed very gratifying, and only right that they should cherish fond memories of the land of their ancestors. Concluding, Mr Telfer expressed keen regret at the death of a very enthusiastic member of the society, Mrs P. Grieve. Mrs Grieve had been an energetic member, said Mr Telfer. Hec work, in particular on the women's auxiliary, had been of great value. He felt sure that the death of Mrs Grieve had caused keep regret to all who had known her. A lament was then piped by Pipe-Major J. McLachlan, all present standing. The programme was as follows: — Ode, "Scots Wha' Ha'e," Mr D. McGill; selection, society's pipe band; song. "Castles in the Air," Miss Alice Chapman; highland reel. Misses Joan McDonald, Headier McLachlan, Una and Bonnie Sanders; song (selected), Mr H. J. Francis: violin solo, Scottish airs. Miss Lily Robertson: Highland fling. Miss Cathie Walton; song, "Blue Bonnets Over the Border," Mrs Ledsham; humour. Mr Jimmy Grieve; seaiin truibhais. Miss Jean Dickson; musical item. Campbell boys; song, "Angus Mac Donald," Mrs Stallard; Gillie Cahim, Miss Joy McLachlan; song (selected). Mr H. J. Francis; violin solo, Scottish airs, Miss Lily Robertson; sailor's hornpipe, Miss Lenore Upton: song, "Skye Boat Song," Mr D McGill: song, "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose,'' Miss Alice Chapman; humour, Mr Jimmy Grieve: song. "Lassie o' Mine," Mr Peter Thomson; Reel o' Tulloch, Misses Jean Smith. Betty McMillan, Ngaire Brown, and June Napier. The accompanist was Miss Alice Gibb. . , At the conclusion of the musical programme supper was served and a dance was held, the music being supplied by Mrs Creagh. The arrangements for the evening were in the hands of Mr W.. H. Mathison, the secretary of the society.
