The Ratana Memorial The Arowhenua Maori pa presented a busy appearance on Wednesday, when it was expected that Mr W. T. Ratana would during the day perform the ceremony of unveiling the memorial which bears his name and stands at the entrance to the pa which leads off from the main highway. The wet weather prevented the ceremony being carried out, and at 4 o'clock it wes resolved to await a change in the weather. Yesterday being fine, there was a large gathering of natives present from all parts of the South Island, supplemented by Mr Ratana's large party from the north. ST. ANDREWS To commemorate the seventeenth anniversary of the armistice a special armistice service was held in the .Anglican Church, when members of the Pareora-St. Andrews sub-branch cf the .Returned Soldiers' Association ! paraded. Claremont Women's Institute Mrs White nresided at the last meeting of the Claremont Women's Institute, and welcomed visitors from the Tvcho and Gleniti institutes. She introduced Misses Amy Neville-Smith, who gave an interesting talk on music, which she illustrated with songs and violin sclos. Miss Neville-Smith was assisted by two of her students, Miss Margaret Martin and Miss Florence Munro. Miss D. Stowell gave a piano solo, and played the accompaniments. Miss Neville-Smith also played a duet with Miss Munro. The competitions resulted: Best lettuce, Miss Armstrong 1, Mrs Talbot 2, Mrs Armstrong 3; six pieces of shortbread, Miss Armstrong 1, Mrs White 2, Miss Seyb 3; premier bloom, Mrs Armstrong. PAREORA In spile of the wet weather there was a good attendance at the November meeting of the Pareora Women's Institute, which was presided over by Mrs A. Wallace. Arrangements were made for the Christmas party which is to be held in the hall on December 11. The demonstrator for the afternoon was Mrs Winnington, of Gleniti, who showed how to reseat men's and boys' trousers. She also explained the recovering of umbrellas, and exhibited one or two specimens. Songs were erven by Mrs T. Guthrie and a competition was won by Miss Cook. Mr W. A. Sherratt i was elected chairman, l.lr C. C. Knight, i secretary, and Mr J. F. Grimstone, ueasurer. A letter was received from the band stating that a band committee had been formed and would meet at regular intervals. Mr C. C. Knight said that the management committee should back Mr Undrill up in all matters connected with the control of the band. The success of the band was entirely in the hands of Mr Undrill, the conductor, ?nd it should be seen tnat everybody did their part in assisting him. Mr A. J. Johnstone said the band had formed a committee, and it had been decided that all accounts should •;ass through the secretary's hands and that he should keep an account of hem. On the suggestion of Mr Grimstone, it was decided to hold meetings monthly on the second Monday in the month, and to make application to the council to hold meetings in the Council Chambers. It was decided that the committee pay a visit to the band room on the next Tuesday practice night.

It was pointed out that the band had not received last year's animal grant oi £ls from Iho council, and it Democrat's Political Meeting In spite of the rain, 70 were present in the Town Hall on Wednesday to hear Mr J. Cartwright, the Democrat candidate. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr J. R. Lack, presided, and the audience gave the candidate a sympathetic and attentive hearing. At the conclusion of the address, Mr T. Buckley moved a vote of thanks, which was carried by acclamation. Amateur Athletics A meeting of the committee of the Geraldine Amateur Athletic Club was held on Wednesday evening, with the president (Mr A. M. Fyfe) in the chair. The programme for the inter-club sports meeting, pending approval by the South Canterbury sub-centre, will be as follows:—100 yards, 220 yards, 440 yards, 380 yards, and one mile races, and 440 yards relay race, A and B grades; field events, hop, step, and jump, high jump, pole vault, javelin, and putting the shot events. Ladies' events, 75 yards, high jump, long jump, and 440 yards relay race. On the motion of Messrs Lewis and Campbell the women's subscription was fixed at 3s.
