TURF GOSSIP At Riccarton To-morrow The acceptances received for the concluding day's racing at Riccarton to-morrow promise well for another excellent day's racing. With drying conditions yesterday, and treatment by Mr Mac Nab and his staff, the track can be expected to be almost back to its best order by to-morrow. A few fresh horses are carded, including Queen of Song, Jack Ahoy, Rose of Tralee, Silver Jest, Morepork, Wino, Latitude, and Emissary. Change of Stables Hine Ra is to be taken to Trentham by T. R. George after this week's meeting. High Value A North Island visitor enquired on Wednesday if Grey Honour could be purchased, but at the price asked, 1200 guineas, negotiations were not opened. Doubtful Starter Knockfin, who won the Stewards' Handicap with 7st 131b, was raised 151b in the Members' Handicap, and her task now looks a very severe cne. She was not started on the two middle days, and unless the track becomes very favourable, it may be decided not to start her to-morrow. Taking No Risk Vintage has not made the recovery anticipated earlier in the week, and although he is much better, it was deemed advisable not to pay up for him in the Metropolitan Handicap. A Strong Bracket Wild Chase, Paper Slipper, and Stout Heart will be bracketed on the machine in to-morrow's Pioneer Handicap, and Custos and Cerne Abbas will also be bracketed. Increased Patronage The attendance at Riccarton on New Zealand Cup day was approximately 12,000. The figures on both Cup and Derby days were in advance of those of last year, while Wednesday's attendance was on a par with that on Oaks day 12 months ago. Good Breeding Dollar Bill, winner of the Ashley Handicap at Riccarton on Wednesday, was bred by Mr T. Newman, of Wellington. His dam Zarisee was bred at Kinloch, and is by Paladin from Mazabuka by Chaucer. Zarisee was raced by Mr G. Murray-Aynsley, and sold by him to the Elderslie Stud. Mazatuko, dam of Superex, is a granddaughter of Mazabuka. Expensive Trips Several visiting horses have not waited to see the Cup meeting through owing to their lack of form. These include Kiltowyn, who failed to act in the going and also seemed troubled by the left-handed track. Mr A. Symes's pair, Rompalong and Bodyline, were s.ent home after Monday's racing, and F. Davis has returned to Woodville with his team without gaining a winning bracket. Not Saddled Up High Glee galloped fairly well at Riccarton before the Cup meeting, and it was thought that he would race prominently during the week, but he did not do as well as he promised earlier, and he has returned south without having had a race. High Glee also went to Trentham,- but was not produced. TROTTING NOTES Answer to Correspondent: J. K. Belfast. The National Handicap on August 17, 1934. Driving in Races Free Holmes makes few mistakes in driving in races, but it appeared at Addington yesterday that he erred in taking the inside running when he might well have followed the horses on the more solid foundation on the outside. In Graham Direct in the Ellesmere Handicap, he handled a very warm favourite, and everything went well until he attempted a run on the inside in treacherous going. The gelding went to a break. It might have been expected. One well-known driver considered the pick of the running in the centre of the track was worth at least four seconds to the round, coml» pared with a run on the rails. Fine Three-Year-Olds The inclusion of the Riccarton Stakes on the opening day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting probably gave Double Great the New Zealand Ucrby, for after his first day's win he looked a much-improved gelding and he behaved in the manner of an experienced pacer. He may have won under any conditions and on any kind of track, but the luck of the running was not with Frisco Lady nor Casanova. The last-named especially had to make up ground over the last three furlongs, and this may have meant the difference between victory and defeat Casanova is a pacer likely to i- reach the highest class, a game race- . horse with stamina above the average. A Fine Racehorse War Buoy is a grand racehorse, one that can be depended upon to do his best every time he is produced and I In his twenty-first start yesterday, he 1 scored his sixteenth win. He lost | ground at the start of the Louisson Me- , morial. but in this race he had the advantage o£, a pacemaker, something uniisual for him, and he finished with , the"-gamenes*s of his sire. Man o' War. General regret was expressed that his faincr. M.B. Edwards, was not well

enough to drive the gelding, but in his absence, his brother, S. A. Edwards, did everything to help War Buoy to victory. Trotting Stock Sale The Carnival Week sale of trotting stock will be held on Monday, at 9 a.m., in Tattersall's Horse Bazaar. Included in the catalogue is Fine Art, a three-year-old by Jack Potts from Golden Bond. Mr W. J. Moir. Flaxton, has*entered three brood mares— Mavis Bingen, Cyone, and Sonora, all stinted to David McElwyn, and four youngsters by American sires from his well-bred mares, including a two-year-old gelding by Frank Worthy from Mavis Bingen, educated at Addington. Mrs Duncan, of Coldstream Lodge, has entered a colt, a half-brother to Lord Leslie, by Man o' War (imp.), the sire of War Bouy. There is also a four-year-old double-gaited filly, that has been in harness only a few times, by Rey de Oro (imp.), from Marcelle. This youngster is a half-sister to Great Chenault. On account of the owner is a brood mare, Marcelle (by Rothschild), from a Prince Imperial mare, the dam of Great Chenault. Another promising maiden is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Travis Axworthy from a mare by Logan Pointer, which will be sold to close a partnership. There are three handicap horses so far entered—Dilfashion, a trotter, handicapped on 4min 56sec for two miles, St. Felix, 3min 22 3-ssec, a pacer by Wrack from Latona, 1 and Lady Headford, by Rey de Oro from a Blackchild mare. There is also some good young stock from the following wellknown sires—Wrack, Nelson Derby, Sonoma Harvester, Ahuriri, Matchlight, Brent Locanda, Pedro Pronto, Rey do Oro, Brigand, and Man o' War.
