OPENING UP OF NEW SCENIC ROUTE PROPOSAL OF COASTAL ROAD FROM KARAMEA '. {SPECIAL TO THE MESS.} NELSON, September 15. With a view to the formation of one of the finest scenic routes in New Zealand, in addition to providing access for Karamea and the opening up of land for settlement, a conference of, local bodies in the northern end of the South Island will be held to urge the Government this session to provide funds for the construction of a coastal road from Karamea to Collingwood. j Crs. J. Corder (chairman), H. Ever-1 ett, and G. Manson will represent thei Waimea County Council at the conference at Collingwood on September 28. The total distance of uncompleted road is 42 miles, and the route presents' only average engineering problems. Dry Weather Continues The weather continues to be very dry, with fine, hot days, and very cold nights. There was a frost in the Waimea Plains every night, last week, and growth is practically at a standstill. The dairy . ssason is now in full swing, but there is little grass for cows, and supplies of hay are getting low. Unless warm rains come very soon the position will be serious. It is several years since such a late spring has been experienced. Work on the land is proceeding fast, and farmers are endeavouring to make up for the time lost during the wet •weather ofy the latter part of the Winter. Tobacco Industry The first annual meeting of the Nelson Tobacco Growers' Association, held at Motueka, was attended by the following ward delegates:—Motueka, Messrs J. Martin and T. Kelling; Kiwaka, Messrs F. A. Hamilton and O. C. Wilkinson; Ngatimoti, Messrs H. G. Stringer and C. H. Heaps; Dovedale, Messrs E. R. Friend and J. Black; Waimea and Tapawera, Messrs F. E. Shuttleworth and G. H. Curnow. At a subsequent meeting of the executive Mr F. A. Hamilton was elected president, and Mr H. G. Springer vice-president. The general meeting re-elected Mr B. A. Rowling secretary and Mr O. C. Wilkinson treasurer, and Mr A. J. Tarleton auditor. Persotoal Mr W. R. Hubbert, youth organiser for the Churches of Christ, arrived in 1 Nelson yesterday morning, and conducted services at the local Church of \ Christ to-day. t Mr Arthur Rutland Edwards has been, reappointed a member of the Nelson Land JJoard for a term of two years. Sports Results Results of sports fixtures on Saturday were:— Association (McCartney Cup challenge)— Athletic, (holders) 7, Thistle 1. Ladies' hockey (Charity Cup final)— Rewa A 2, Huia A 0. Rugby (fourth class final)— Nelson 14, College A 0.
