DANCE AT RICCARTON A dance held in the Riccarton racecourse tea rooms last night was one of the most successful functions held to augment the funds of the sports queen candidate (Miss Betty Cotterill) for the Metropolitan Queen Carnival. Members of the Riccarton Racecourse Bowling Club were responsible for the j arrangements. The tea rooms had been specially decorated for the occasion with spring blossoms and greenery, and pastelshaded flowers brightened the supper tables. The dance was made possible by the enterprise of the following committee: Messrs J. Bailey (chairman), P. D. Mac Nab, G. Reed, W. Marsh, H. Daniels. C. Townsend, J. Holmes, and Coutts (secretary). ; Mr M. McKinnon was master of ceremonies and the Evans-Campbell dance band provided the music. Amongst the guests were many representatives from kindred clubs and Messrs W. Healey, T. Fox, F. S, Barnett, and C. Madsen, representing the Christchurch Bowling Centre. BLENHEIM NEWS To celebrate his eightieth birthday anniversary, Mr Edmund Rutherford entertained some of his relatives and friends at an enjoyable party, heTd at his home in Weld street. Owing to the inclement weather a number of Ris Canterbury relatives were unable to attend Afternoon tea was served in the dining room, the table being decorated with spring flowers, and a birthday cake decorated with 80 candles held pride of place. Mowat, has returned home. WOMEN'S CLUB Mrs J. E. Russell arranged the afternoon musicale held at the Canterbury Women's Club, the rooms being decorated for the occasion with janonica, forsythia, camellias, and arum lilies. Items were given as follows:—Songs, Madame Irene Ainsley; pianoforte solos, Mrs J. E. Russell; vocal duets, Mrs H. L. Bowker and Mrs E. Pidgeon; 'cello solos. Mrs J. Guthrie; songs, Mr Burt. Mrs Russell was the accompanist RETURNED SOLDIERS' SOCIAL The New Brighton sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association held a social evening in the New Princess Theatre annexe. At euchre, the winners were Mesdames H. Nelson and R. A. Jackson, and Messrs W. Cant and G. Fitzgerald. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs F. Booth and Mr J. Cusack. A "New Princess" noveltv dance was won by Miss W. Smith and Mr D. Wakefield, and Mr R. Russell won a competition. The music for dancing was played by Mrs H. RossSmith and Mr F. Arnold, and Mr F. O. Ormandy was master of ceremonies. FAREWELL PARTY To enable friends to say good-bye to Miss Miriam Watson, who has taken a teaching position in Scargill, a surErise party recently visited "Caldeck," the home of Mr and Mrs L. Watson, Oxford. The time was spent in games and music, songs being sung by Messrs A. ' Baxter and I. Constable. Those present included Mr and Mrs L.
