UNEMPLOYMENT TAX
MR COATES'S REPLY TO QUESTION [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 12. "My only reply to you is to. wait and see," said the Minister for Finance (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates), in the House of Representatives today, when Mr D. G. Sullivan (Lab.. Avon) asked him if it was correct, as stated in a Chsristchurch newspaper, that the Government proposed to reduce unemployment taxation by cutting, the emergency charge by 2d or even 4d in the £. Mr Coates added that the Government quite realised the difficulties of the unemployed. Mr Sullivan asked whether the Minister had seen the protests of Anglican, Roman Catholic, and other clergy, business men, and workers, against such a proposal, which might be calculated to increase the sufferings of the unemployed unless adequate alternative provisilm was made to improve the earnings of relief workers. If it was intended to reduce the emergency tax, would the Minister give an assurance that the Government would make adequate provision for the unemployed? ~ ' The Minister's only reply was as above.
