WELLINGTON, September One hundred more men are to be placed on the Lewis Pass road construction job immediately, bringing the total number employed there to 260. Announcing this to-day in the House of Representatives the Minister for Public Works (the Hon.:J. BHchener) said that it was not proposed to make-a begmning at the Reefton end of the road just a, piefent but that he .would investigate this proposal further. So?d progress had already been made with the work, and fhe additional men now being placed-would ensure still greater progress. U was anticipate! that; the expenditure for this year would be about £30,000. The Minister's statement.was in reply to an urgent question by Mr K J Holyoake (C, Motueka), who called, attention to the resolution carried by a Reefton public meeting referring to the Prime Ministers promise for the speedy completion of the road, and asking the Government, to establish a camp on the Reefton' side to expedite the work. Mr-Holyoake's interest in the Lfewis Pass road and his efforts to have the work extended were mentioned by Mr Bitchener.
