NEWS ' DESTRUCTION BY FIRES FEWER OUTBREAKS BUT MORE DAMAGE (4PBCIAI« *• W* MMI.) BLENHEIM; July 24. The sixty-fifth annual report of tb» Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade wsa presented by the chief officer, Captain A. W. Taylor, at the annual meeting at the fire station last evening, to reviewing the brigade's activities during the year, Captain Taylor reported that there was a decrease in the number of fires, 20 against 36 during &• previous year. The fire loss showtjtj an increase over the previous year of £1333, the total value of property, buildings and contents, destroyed totalling £4465, which is the heaviest loss sustained for the last four years. He mentioned that in response to the appeal for more members, five new members had come forward. Two-year-service bars were presented to Captain A. W. Taylor and AssistantForeman G. Furness. Captain Taylor's service now totals 15 years, and Assistant-Foreman Furness 21 years. , Hockey Fixtures The hockey fixtures for Saturday are:—Senior—Men: Kaikoura v. Marlborough, at Horton Park. Junior—Men: Kaikoura v. Marlborough, at Horton Park. Senior—Women: Kaikoura v. Marlborough, at Horton Park, A and B trial match, at Horton Park. Memorial Cop Presented At the meeting of the management committee of the Marlborough Rugby Union, the Waitohi Club advised that Mr and Mrs T. Watson, of East Bay, Queen Charlotte Sounds, desired to present to the union, in memory or their son, Lindsay, who died of injuries received while playing Rugby in Wellington during the present season, a challenge cup, to be known as the Lindsay Watson Memorial Cup. Rules suggested were that the cup be allotted for competition amongst the senior teams, the first match to be played against Waitohi, at Picton. and subsequent games to be played on the holders' ground in conjunction with the usual championship matches. The offer was accepted with thanks and the question of rules was left for consideration at the next general* meeting of the union. Waitohi and Central thirds were granted the curtain-raiser for the first Seddon Shield match against West Coast on August 3. Mr G. W. Neville was appointed manager of the West Coast team, and Mr 6. Fawcett of the local team.
