WAIMAIRI COUNTY
♦ MEETING OF COUNCIL FIRE PROTECTION SCHEME The Waimairi County Council met Inst evening. There were present Messrs W. G. Chapman (in the chair). T. O. Newnham, J. Liggins, W. P. Spcnccr, G. G. Gardner, C. W. Moore. F. S. Scott, and W. J. Walter. The Christchurch Fire Board wrote pointing out the possible risk of damage by fire to valuable premises in the Fendclton ridinij which were some distance away from water. The board was prepared to reduce its annual charge by £IOO after the construction of the sumps stipulated by the Minister for Internal Affairs. The borrd had adopted a suggestion made b. Superintendent C. C. Warner, that one 10,000-gallon underground tank be built at the intersection of Jeffreys and Bryndwr roads, and a similar tank at the corner of Hinau and Puriri streets Mr Scott said that the cost of the scheme suggested had been considered some years ego, and it had been found that it would involve a great deal of expense. It was impossible to estimate the cost of a tank in the area mentioned. The scheme had been rejected previously because it was too big a scheme for the council to finance. The position was the sdme to-day. Mr Gardner said that neither the cost nor the difficulties of the scheme were known. He would like an investigation to be made, and possibly an interview held with the fire board. It was decided to refer the scheme to the two Fendalton members, Messrs Gardner and Scott, to report as soon as possible. The council decided to make a further contribution of 10 guineas to the Children's Relief . Fund.
