SPREYDON PUBLIC LIBRARY
—~# SATISFACTORY YEAR REVIEWED Another successful year, and one of gradual advancement, was reviewed at the sixth annual meeting of the Spreydon Public Library, which was held last evening. There was a good attendance of subscribers, friends, and representatives of other libraries, all of whom congratulated the members and the committee on the year's working and on the fine appearance of the library. Cr. E. Parlane, who, on the motion of Mr E. Fehsenfeld, was elected to the chair, apologised for the absence of the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, MP.) and the patron (Mr E. J. Howard, M.P.). He welcomed the members and the visitors, and said it was pleasing to see the interest which was being taken by subscribers in the affairs of their libraries.
! The annual report, which was adopted unanimously, recorded the efforts of the committee to meet the tastes of all subscribers in providing as wide a selection of books as the finances would permit During the year 491 volumes had been added to (he shelves, making a grand total of 3359. The sum of £lO3 had been spent in buying new bocks, and the cost of repairs and upkeep kept to a minimum. The number of subscribers now totalled 208, a slight increase on that of the previous year Thanks were expressed to the various officers for their services and also to the social committee, which during the year organised social evenings that resulted in the sum of £7 12s 8d being raised. Appreciation was also expressed to those who made gifts of books during the year. "It was felt that we were labouring under a disability compared with other libraries in ratio to our membership, and after full deliberation a deputation was appointed to place the position before the council," the report stated, with reference to the subsidy granted by the City Council. "The deputation subsequently waited on the finance committee and was given an encouraging hearing. As the matter affects the finances of the new council for the ensuing year, it will be considered when preparing the estimates, and we are optimistic enough to feel that the council will make a suitable adjustment whereby any anomaly which has existed will be equitably adjusted."
