NEW BRIGHTON NOTES
BOROUGH WORKS Many streets in the north and west parts q£ the borough now present a very clean appearance, the sides of the roads having been chipped. Baker street, Racecourse road, and Estuary road have been patched, and the Esplanade from Lonsdale street to Berry street has been scarified and metal is being put on, and will later be graded and rolled. Shaw avenue and Keppel street have already been rolled. Mothers' Union The monthly meeting of the New Brighton branch of the Mothers' Union was held on Thursday. At the church service, at which the Rev. K. ScholJar presided, one new member was admitted, and at the meeting in the Parish Hall which followed the enrolling member. Mrs P. Schollar, was in the chair, when two members were recpived A presentation was maue to Mrs It. Hargrove, a member of long standing, who has left the district. Mr Schollar gave an explanatory talk on a series of pictures sent out fiom land for the instruction of branches m the Dominion. Tea was server by Mesdamas H. O. Brooks and J. Nunan.. Relief Workers The number of unemployed engaged in the borough under the No. 5 scheme remains at 1154, which is the same number as were employed wee*. Euchre and Dance A euchre and dance was arranged by the local sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association. The winners at euchre were Mesdames A. v/akeiield and G Ludbrook, and Messrs D. Wakefield and J. Cusack. The dance music was played by Mrs H. Ross-Smith assisted by Mr F. Arnold and Mr J. R. Andrews was master of ceremonies. A novelty dance was v/on by Mr Stephens and Mrs Newton. Workers' Educational Association Mr A. L. R. Noonan was the lecturer at a meeting of tne New Brighton Workers' Educational Association in the High School, Sea View road. Human tendencies were discussed. Home Gardens Association At the monthly meeting of the Home Gardens Association, held in the Secondary School on Wednesday, when Mr J S. Ainsworth was in the chair, Mr A. H. Shrubshall gave an interesting address on gardening generally, with special attention to the successful growing of annual and perennial plants. Card Evenings At the bowlers' weekly whist tournament the winners were Mrs R. Smith and Mr S. Weston. At the weekly bridge evening hela in the croquet club pavilion on Thursday, the prize-winners were Mrs w. Whitely, Mrs A. Dey, and Mr N. Jarvis. The grand aggregate was v/on by Mrs J. Spedding. Relief of Distress The need of boots for children is still most pressing, and the Mayor <M,r E. L. Smith) will take the chair at a concert in the Premier Theatre on Sunday evening to help the distress fund. The fund should derive considerable benefit from the entertainment, as the Nellie Bramlcy company and Miss Betty Milliard will be among the contributing artists. NORTH BEACH Personal > Mrs C. Collins and Misa Collins, who have been the guccti of Mrs- E. 11. Barker, Travis's road, have returned home. Mr and Mrs W. M.::llraiih, who have been the guests of Mrs J. H. Coates, Bowhill road, have returned to their home at Russell's Flat. Cards and Dance The weekly flag 500 and dance organised by the social committee of the North Beach Progress League and Beautifying Association was held in the Memorial Hall on Tuesday evening. The music was played by Mr P. E. L. Broad, with extras by Mr J. Harriss. Mr R. Kennedy wr s master of ceremonies. The players at ine winning table were Mrs H. Barr, Messrs H. Barr and C. V. Lester. The consolation prize winners were Mesdames T. Thomson, jun., E. Osborne, and Mr E. Osborne. A Monte Carlo was won by Mr and Mrs T. E. Thomson, and a competition by Mr P. BarrabalL
North Brighton School At a meeting of the North New Brighton School Committee an offer V/as received from the Shirley Expression Club to provide the programme for a concert in aid of the school fund.';. It was decided to accept the offer and to hold the concert in the Memorial Hall on Thursday, July 4. Kelicf of Distress Fund At a meeting of the social committee of the North Beach Progress League and Beautifying Association held during the week it was decided to organise a community sing and dance to be held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday, July 13, in aid of the Mayor of New Brighton's Relief /of Distress Fund. The secretary was-_ instructed to apply to the Rawhiti Domains Board for three cords of wood for a competition. It was reported that the hall committee had offered the use of the hall without charge to assist the funds. Band of Hope The fortnightly meeting of the Band of Hope was held in the Baptist Church, under the auspices of the North New Brighton Women's Christian Temperance Union. The Rev. E W. Grigg presided. An address was given by Pastor J. Crawford, of the St. Albans Church of Christ. Items were given by Mrs Henley, loreen Kemp, Pculine Henley, June Eade, Philip Lawson, Jack Pease, Alison Peppier, Miriam Peppier, Miss Dudney, and the Rev. E. W. Grigg. Benefit Golf Match A mixed foursome will be held by "Waimairi Beach Golf Club 011 August 18, the proceeds to be given to the Mayor of New Brighton's Relief of Distress Fund. Card Party at Aranui The weekly euchre party organised in,aid of the Aranui Hall funds was heid on Thursday evening. Messrs E. Rouse and G. K. McCaw were in charge. The winners were Mesdames L. Frost, I-. R. Perrin, Messrs C. Bljom, and R. Moody. Have you anything to sell?—Do you wish to buy?
