WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

LEESTON At the monthly meeting of the Leeston Women's Institute, Miss V. Bowes presided and there was a good attendance. One new member was elected, and Mrs C. G. Fisher and Miss Bowes were appointed delegates to the Federation meeting to be held in Christchurch on May 1. It was decided to place a wreath on the county memorial on Anzac Day, and to be represented in the procession on the day of the King's jubilee celebrations. Schedules for the arts and crafts exhibition for institutes in the North Canterbury Federation, to be held on July 3 and 4, in Christchurch. were distributed. Mrs F. B. Clausen was appointed social convener and it is Intended to form a drama circle with Mrs Clausen in charge. An instructive address was giv«n by Dr, H. T. J, Thacker on "Nature's Foods." Ho expressed a desire to continue his talk at a future meeting and arrangements were made for him to visit the institute again on May 21. The competitions resulted as follows Baked apples (judged by Mrs Thacker): Mrs J. Bryce 1, Miss G. Lemon 2; best bloom, Mrs P. B. Berkett 1, Mrs W. ■Lambie 2, and with Miss L. Parkin (equal) 3. The hostesses wero Mesdames W. J. Ormandy, W. Lambie, T. J. Ramsey, and H. J. Millar, and Misses A. Parkin and L. Parkin. ASHLEY The monthly meeting of the Ashley Women's Institute was held recently, when Miss J. E. Croft presided. The date of the first birthday party was fixed for May 23. A demonstration on tapestry work v/as given by Miss Kitto. Competitions for the afternoon resulted as follows:—Jar of fruit, Mrs W. Drake 1, Mrs 11. Jones 2; jar of jelly, Miss Z. Beattic 1, Mrs A. Baird 2. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Dempaey, K. Wright, and F, Lowe. SEFTON-KOWAI The monthly meeting of the SeftonKowal Women's Institute v/as held in tho Parish Hall, when Mrs Matthews presided. A musical programme, arranged by the social committee, was given. Mesdames May and Cameron song solos, Miss Cory and Miss M. Stringer played a piano duet, and Miss J. Hanna a piano solo. The community singing was led by Mesdames May and Dalzell. The prizes for most points in the competitions for the year were presented to Mesdames u. M. Lang and J. Haigh. Miss Margaret Stringer was presented with a life membership certificate as a tribute to the service rendered to the institute by her late mother. The drama circle produced a short sketch. The bring and buy effort realised £2 14s for the funds. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Howe, D. Ramsay, N. Ritchie, R, Stringer, and Miss M. Stringer. OHOKA At the April meeting of the Ohoka Women's Institute Mrs J. Ward ■ presided. Mrs Armstrong was appointed to represent the branch at the Dominion conference at Auckland, and Mesdames Kimber and Martyn were appointed delegates to the North Canterbury Federation. A demonstration on raffia work was given by Mrs Bowbyes. The winners of the competition for the best bloom in own garden were:—Mrs R. Palmer 1, Miss Norma Palmer 2. Miss Vera Stone 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Church. Brown, Fairman, and Miss Bailey. WILLOWBY-EIFFELTON The April meeting of the WillowbyEifTelton Women's Institute was held in tho Eiffclton School, with Mrs R. Pearce presiding. The roll call was "My Birthplace." Mrs Pearce gave a report of the formation meeting of tho Mid-Canterbury Federation, and reports were also given by Mrs Moffatt and Mrs J. Taylor, delegates to the half-yearly conference. An interesting demonstration on the making of presentation bouquets was given by Mrs Glenie, assisted by Mr 3 Heid. Large bowls of chrysanthemums and autumn foliage brightened the room, and in this competition tho successful exhibitors were: Miss Alma Watts 1, Mrs S. t P. Taylor 2, Miss M. Taylor 3. For the competition, "The result of one egg," there were six onirics, Mrs H. Watts being first, Mrs J. j_,attimore and Miss Alma Watts (equal) second, and Miss Jean Taylor, third. Both competitions wero judged by Mesdames Glenie and Reid. During the afternoon, items were given by the institute choir, solos were sung by Mrs R. Pearce and Mrs Latimer, and an. elocutionary item was given by Miss Mary Taylor. Mrs T. O'Grady was the accompanist, and the hostesses we're Mesdames P. Sheehan, E. Soal, H. Crossman, and Latimer. Members of the committee of trie Willowby-EifTelton Women's Institute met Mrs B. T. Clothier to wish her happiness and prosperity in her new home, and to express thanks for the efficient manner in which she had carried out her duties, especially during the 18 months she was secretary. Mrs Pearce, president, handed to Mrs Clotheir a bouquet. During the afternoon competitions were won by Mrs Clothier and by Miss D. Dollman, and a monologue was given by Miss Mary Taylor. On behalf of the members of the committee, Mrs J. Lattirnore, vicepresident, wished Mrs Clothier bon voyage and presented her with a crystal vase. Mrs Clothier suitably replied. ALLENTON Tho Allenton Women's Institute met recently, with Mrs E. S. Chambers presiding. It was decided not to send a delegate to x~nd in July. It was also decided to form a folk dancing circle, and also a drama circle. Mrs E. S. Chambers gave a comprehensive report on the formation of the Mid-Canterbury Federation meeting. A demonstration on eggshell . moslac was given by Mrs E. Vincent. Mrs Flatman and a party from the Hampstead Institute gave an exhibition of folk dancing. The competition for the best buttonhole made in 10 minutes resulted as follows:-Mrs P. Noble i, Mrs Eden 2, Mrs Crozier 3. The hostesses were Medames G. Harris, D. A. Morgan, and L. A. Walker. LOWCLIFFE The April meeting of the Lowcliffc Women's Institute v/as held on Wednesday, Mrs Hawke presiding over a good attendance. Five new members were enrolled. The reports of the meetings of the federation at Geraldine and the meeting for the formation of a Mid-Canterbury Federation wero given by the delegates. The roll call was, "Uses of Vinegar." LYNDHURST The monthly meeting of the Lyndhurst Women's Institute was held in the hall. Mrs A. C. Gadd, president, presided. It was decided that a delegate be sent to the Dominion conference, to be held in Auckland. A health talk was given by Dr. D. G. Wallace, Methven. Mrs Williams, Auckland, Mrs C. Prebble, and Mrs Giles judged the competitions, with the following results:—Article made from waste, Mrs Limbrick 1, Miss M. McDowell 2, and Mrs Scott 3; six almond fingers, Mrs Limbrick 1, Mrs Symes 2. and Mrs GiJmour 3. During the social half-hour a test of knowledge competition was held, Mrs McKcndry and Miss McDowell being equal, 1, and Miss Ayors 3. Mrs Henderson was in charge of the sales table. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames S. 11. Anderson, L. C. Anderson, Drummond, and Rule. SCARUILL-MOTUNAU The monthly meeting of the ScargillMotunau Women's Institute was held in the Scargill Hall recently, and was presided over by the president, Mrs W. Fleming. It was decided to send as the two delegates to the federation meeting on May 1 Mrs B. Coe and Mrs G. Bristow. Further officers were elected: Competitions, Miss Gibb; sales table and patterns, Mrs W. Brown; cookery book, Mrs ft. Johnson. During the afternoon a demonstration was given by Miss M. Baxter, Omlhi, on wicker stool-making. The results of the competitions were as follows: —Best bowl of autumn foliage, Mrs G. Bristow 1, Mrs W. Leach 2, Mrs W.. Fleming 3. Powder guessing, Mrs R. Johnson 1, Mrs W. Fleming 2, Miss M. Carston 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames W. Brown, D. MacDonaid, and W. Leach. MEDBURY At the monthly meeting of the Medbury Women's Institute, the president, Miss S. Galletly, presided over a good attendance. The roll call for the day, "A Cure for the Blues," was well answered. It was decided to hold the annual birthday party in June. It will take the form of a concert and dance. Winners of the competition for best jar of bottled fruit were Mrs J. Gilbert 1, Mrs Ginders 2. . Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames S. Ginders and C. Gilbert. CAVE The Cave Women's Institute celebrated its fourth birthday party recently. It was decided to send a delegate to the Dominion conference in July. Mrs L. E. Williams, president of the South Canterbury Federation, spoke briefly, stressing the importance of institutes sending a delegate whenever possible. Miss Davies .(Woodbury) gave a sketch of the pageant which the South Canterbury Federation hope to produce in the summer. The prize-winners for the year were (Mrs L. E. Williams presenting the prizes):—Most points in competitions during the'ycar, Miss Weavers 1, Miss Wisely 2, Mrs Malthus 3. Those gaining most quarterly points were Mrs W. Little, third quarter, and Mrs Cameron, fourth quarter. Mrs Hart, on behalf of the members, then presented Miss Amyes with a bowl in appreciation of her efforts in the interest of the institute. A bouquet of roses was also presented to her by Elma Young. Miss Amyes responded. A musical programme was enjoyed. The performers were Miss Neville Smith and Miss Munro (violinists), and Miss Newman (accompanist). Mrs Cliff (Pleasant Point) also sang. Afternoon tea was then served by the hostesses, and a birthday cake, which had been made by Mrs Davison, was cut by Mrs L. E. Williams. Mrs Williams addressed the meeting and spoke of the aims arid ideals of the institute. Miss Davies gave an account of her trip from England to New Zealand, via America. The competition winners for the month were:—Best bloom, Mrs Moses 1, Mrs Sarensen 2, and Miss McKenzfe 3. Embroidered apron: Mrs Wisely 1. Mrs Gray 2, and Mrs Squires 3. PREBBLETON The third birthday party of the Prebbleton V/omen's Institute was attended by many visitors, including members of the Templeton, Hornby, Lincoln, Ladbrooks, and Springston Institutes, and of the Broadfield branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Mrs G. Askin (president), who welcomed the guests, was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Miss Margaret Carpenter. The institute song was sung, and a concert . programme was much appreciated. Those taking part included* Miss Edith Bennett, Mrs G. Hancox, Miss Nerol.i Atkinson, Miss Margaret Carpenter, Misses Mildred Easterbrook and Nancy Gallagher, and Master Arthur Smith, Mrs L. A. Galla- j gher, Mrs F. Carter, Mrs H. Prebble, I Mrs L. G. Smith, Misses Bertha Hart- j nell, Joyce and Violet Kolkman, Jean Hammond, Messrs P. Dyer, and H. Prebble. The president presented a silver cup to Mrs J. Easterbrook, who gained most points for competitions during the year, and the runners-up Mrs C. Atkinson and Miss B. Hartnell also received presentations. At supper time the iced birthday cake, made by two members, Mesdames W. Kolkman and T. Coleman, was cut by the president. At the dance held later, music was supplied by Holland's Band, and Mr H. Prebble was master of ceremonies. MOUNT PLEASANT The flrut annual meeting was held last Tuesday at Mrs Worrall's residence, Mrs Morten being in the chair. The report and balance-sheet for the year were read and passed. The following committee was elected:—Mesdames Morten (president), Woodford, Worrall (vice-presidents), Timbrell (secretary), Edgar (treasurer), G. A. K. Williams, Turland, Cossar, Edmonds, Congreve, W. F. Roche, and Miss HoodWilliams. Mrs Morten was appointed as delegate to the forthcoming annual conference at Auckland. Mrs D. Vaughon was the speaker for the afternoon. Her 'talk on beauty culture and health hints was listened to with great interest by all present, and £she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Morten and Mrs Vaughan were presented, by the committee with bouquets. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames Worrall, Congreve, Cossar, and Webb. A combined social evening will be held at "Stonycroft" on Saturday, May 18.
