A dense fog enveloped the course for a period while training operations were in progress at Ellcrslie this morning, and it was impossible to time all the gallops. The course proper, with the poles out 60 feet, was used for fast work, and the going was holding. The best effort of the morning v/as credited to Kiltowyn, who ran

seven furlongs after the breakfast interval in lmin 33 2-ssec. Star Artist and Light Comedy sprinted half a mile in 53sec. They ( finished together and did their work in good style. Star Artist and Light Comedy appear to have taken no harm from their racing at Ellerslie, and should strip well at Avondale. Gay Broney was going comfortably io cover seven furlongs in lmin 37sec, Courthaven leading him home over the last five. Gay Broney is in fine form at present, and if he gets the going to suit him he should be very difficult to beat in the Foley Memorial Handicap. He does not relish heavy ground, and the conditions were all against him when he ran in the 11. O. Nolan Handicap last Monday. Versant was better than Imamint over five furlongs, finishing just in front in lmin 6 3~ssec. The race he had last Monday should be beneficial to Versant, who should make a better showing the next time he is produced. The easy state of the tracks at present will be to his liking. Grand Sport was better than Grand Talk over five furlongs in lmin 3 2-ssec. the first two in 26 3-ssec. Grand Sport hit out with great freedom m the soft going, and was travelling very easily at the finish. He appears to be all the better for his race last Monday.

Sporting Blood and Korokio were associated over six furlongs in Imin 22 l-ssec. They finished together and both hit out in good style. Sporting Blood seems none the worse for his racing at the recent meeting, and should perform solidly at Avondale, especially if the track happens to be heavy. Miss Lulu was going very strongly alongside Yalspear at the conclusion of four furlongs in 54scc. Miss Lulu was going strongly at the finish, and has apparently benefited by her recent racing. She failed to do as well as was expected on the second day at Ellerslie, but may soon make amends. Impasto and Rulanut finished well clear of Roman Mascot, who was eased up at the end after they had completed seven furlongs in lmin 34 l-ssec. Impasto and Roman Mascot were together in front in the early stages, the first three taking 39sec. Rulanut ran up on the outside of Impasto when Roman Mascot dropped back, and there was little between them at the finish. Rulanut is temporarily under the care of R. S. Bagby. On Parade and Gay Defence were several lengths clear of Tybalt at the end of five furlongs in lmin Bsec. On Parade and Gay Defence went in good style, and Tybalt could have done much better, as he was under restraint. King Mestor and Thcspis were better than Record Flight (Tremain) over six furlongs in lmin 3C 3-ssec. Thespis looks all the better for the racing he has had lately, and will probably compete on the second day at Avondale. Record Flight is also in good heart, and should race well at a mile and a half on Saturday. Kiltowyn galloped seven furlongs in lmin 33 2-ssec, a solid effort under the conditions. His rider gave him a couple of kicks near the end, and he finished resolutely. Kiltowyn appears to have benefited by the two races he had at the autumn meeting. Tai Yang was not bustled to run five furlongs in lmin 7 l-ssec. The two-year-old suffered no ill-effects from his outing on the first day of the autumn meeting, and bears a very bright appearance. Gay Marigold and King Musk were galloped separately; but they were not timed. They finished up their tasks soundly. Trials at Avondale The course proper, where the poles were out 65 feet, was available for galloping at Avondale yesterday, and provided fairly good going, although it was easy on the surface. Laudatory worked over a round, striding /uong evenly throughout, and running the last mile in lmin 57 3-5 sec. King Ford comfortably defeated Adalene over live furlongs in lmin 6 1-oscc, the first two in 2o'sec. King Ford was lightly weighted, but went with plenty of freedom, revelling in the easy going. Sinking Fund galloped six furlongs in lmin 19 2-nscc, the first three in 38 3-ssec. Lilbert broke away ahead and led him over the last four furlongs in 53 l-fisec. Sinking Fund and Lilbert are both looking bright and healthy. Coronis galloped a mile in lmin 57 sec, going smoothly till the way. Rugby Meteor and Travelling Agent were allotted strong work, running home the last three furlongs in 40sec. Delrain and Solo Song were much too good for Landlubber, who was beaten off at the conclusion of sixfurlongs in lrnin 19sec, the first three in 39sec. Delrain finished strongly on the outside, and is in good heart after his recent racing. Bonn} Gay placed seven furlongs behind in lmin 35 4-Ssec. This improving mare did not have the best of luck in her races at Whangarei. and should be seen to more advantage in her coming engagements. Like others of the progeny of Gay Shield, Bonny Gay is partial to soft going. Aslarth was going very comfortably alongside Mnskon at the conclusion of five furlongs in lmin G 2-ssec, a very satisfactory effort. Aslarth bears tin improved appearance, and Muskon is also racing better than usual. Riding Engagements Riding engagements announced for the first day of the Avondale Jockey Club's meeting include:—W. Ronnie, Ruling King; L. Dulieu, Grand Talk; E. Manson, Gay Defence; R. W. MeTavish, On Parade, Vcrsant, Lilbert, Gay Broney; R. Home, Tonnerrc, Musquil, Gay Rose; G. Cameron, Coronis; J.
