TIMARXJ RUGBY COMPETITION i Thirty-five entries have been received for the South Canterbury Rugby Union's competitions, as follows:—Senior, eight; junior, 10; third three; fourth grade, nine; fifth grade, five. Personal Mr G. A, Shillito, of Timaru, has 1 been admitted to membership of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. Cass Collide Two cars came into collision on Monday afternoon on the bridge about six miles on the northern side of Waimate. The Rev. J. D. McArthur, of Timaru, and his family were returning from a visit to the Methodist Young Women's Bible Class camp at Waimate, Miss McArthur being at the wheel, when a second car coming from the north appeared from behind another vehicle, and a collision occurred. Both cars were rather extensively damaged. Mrs McArthur suffered from shock and bruises. The driver of the other car was a man named White, who lives at Alexandra. St. Andrews Rodeo With the object of raising funds for the hall, the St. Andrews Hall Committee held a rodeo on Monday, when a bright and varied programme was presented, the chief attraction being the steer-riding championship, which attracted a field of eight. Sheen Guessing (live weight)—J. Kay. A rodeo dance was held last evening and was well patronised. Municipal Elections In addition to the sitting Mayor, Mr T. W. Satterthwaite, Messrs G. Benstead, the Deputy-Mayor, and G. T. Koller, who is well known in Labour circles, will contest the mayqralty of Timaru. Mr Koller was nominated today by Messrs F. A. Hilton and E. W. Jones. Mr Benstead stated that he had been requested to stand by hundreds of residents, and he had decided it would be somewhat ungrateful if he did not accede. Other new nominations include:— For the borough council:— Percy Herbert Wild, nominated by A. McL. Paterson and A. Craig. John Leffett Howard, nominated by G. J. Wallace and S. Lang. Matthew Henry Richards, nominated by Harold James Washer and Walter Cecil Davies. For the harbour board:— Alfred George Foster, nominated by W. Craig and T. Askey.

TEMUKA Mrs J, R. Bruce, who diod at Tirnaru recently, was one of the first pupils 01" the Temuka School nearly 70 years ago. When the jubilee celebrations were held last Easter she was one of the first three pupils who attended festivities. Misses H. Martin and Joan Martin (Christchurch) are the guests oi Mr and Mrs C. Poultney. Miss T. Pierce (Christchurch) is spending a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs G. Pierce, Eraser street. During Easter, girl guide officers from several South Canterbury companies have been holding a course of instruction in the work of the move-ment-at a camp at the Milford Lagoon. John William Burnham, of Geraldine, appeared before Messrs G. Hancox and E. Blackmore, Justices of the Peace, at the Temuka Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, charged with being found intoxicated while in charge of a motor-truck. Mr F. J. Smith, on behalf of the accused, pleaded guilty. Sergeant M. E. Hill stated that the accused was subjected to the usual test and afterwards medically examined, the doctor expressing the opinion that the man was drunk. Mr Smith appealed for leniency, as he said the accused was not accustomed to liquor, and was not driving the truck in a reckless manner. He was willing to take out a prohibition order. Accused was convicted and fined £5. On his own application a prohibition order was issued.

The South Canterbury Methodist Young Men's Bible Class Union broke camp on Monday, after being under canvas for a week at the Old Mill site near Winchester. Part of Monday was devoted to study and part to games. Through the holidays the annual competitions for various athletic trophies were conducted, the results being:—RadclifTe School (senior sports): Waimate 31 points, Bank street 8 points, Woodlands street 3. Herbert Smith Trust Cup (juniors): Woodland street 16 points, Bank street 11, Hydro and Waimate (equal) 7. A. Wills won the Shortus Cup for the junior gaining most points, and D Hicks the senior division. The Mc« Phedran Shield for the doubles tennis tournament was won by S. Blanchard and D. Hall, who beat K. Fowke and E. Morris in the final.

WINCHESTER There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Winchester Girls' Basketball Club. Mrs J. C. L. Meßratney (president), who presided, referred to the loss the club had suffered in the death of Mr J. L. White, who had been connected with the club since its inception. A vote of sympathy was carried in silence. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected:—President, Mrs J. C. L. MeBratney; vice-presidents, Mesdames H. Oldham, W. Bill, J. Connolly; secretary and treasurer, Miss Dora de Renzy; club captain, Miss N. Kelman; vice-captain, Miss M. Wilks; committee, Mrs W. J. Moore, Misses M. de Renzy, M. Currie, I. Trumper; coach and referee. Miss D. Wilds. It was agreed to affiliate with the association and to enter one team in the B grade competition.

Mr W. J. Oldham (Christchurch) is spending the Easter holidays with his parents, Mr and Mrs H. Oldham, Winchester.

Miss Fanny Cotter (Christchurch) is spending Easter wtih her sister, Mrs T. Harrison, Winchester. Mrs G. South has returned to Winchester from a visit to Oxford.

Mrs A. and Mr R. Rankin (Mosgiel) are the guests of Mrs G. South Mrs J. C. South (Smithfield Winchester). is spending the Easter holidays at Patea.

Mrs Hughes, who had been staying with her daughter, Mrs J. C. L MeBratney, Winchester, has returned to Timaru.

[ Special services were held in St. John's Church in the observance of Good Friday. At the morning service the Rev. A. C. K. Harper officiated and the vicar, the Rev. C. L. Mountfort, conducted the evening service. On Easter Day, St. John's was beautifully decorated for the Easter festival services. There was a large congregation at both services. The morning service was conducted by the Rev. C. L. Mountfort. At the conclusion of the service Holy Communion was celebrated. The Rev. A. C. K. Harper officiated at evensong. Mrs W. J. Moore presided at the organ. PLEASANT POINT Mesdames Taylor and Cartwright and Messrs W. B. Oborn (chairman), F. Popplewell, V. McMurtrie, W. Halkett, and Dr. Benham attended the monthly meeting of the Pleasant Point District High School Committee. The headmaster, Mr J. J. McGuigan, reported that the average attendances were—Primary, 134.9 out of a roll of 143; and secondary, 49.5 (51). It was decided to purchase a new lawn mower and to have the sewing machines overhauled. Mr Popplewell, as visitor, reported on a number of repairs which were required. Accounts amounting to £9 4s were passed for payment. The football season was opened locally on Saturday, when Waihi ami Point seniors contested a game which was very even. Point eventually won by 8 points to 6. The ground was rather hard, but the turf was iq good order. Mr J. J. McGuigan was referee. Both teams were entertained to dinner at Wall's Hotel after the game, when the usual toasts were honoured.

Point juniors travelled to Cave and played Cave seniors, who won, after an even contest, by 9 to 6. Mr C. Guthrie was the referee.

BURKE'S PASS Several improvements have been carried out in the school grounds recently. The committee fenced oft a plot of ground to gain protection from the rabbits, and the children this week carried soil from the school plantation to form a garden. Under the direction of Mr G. W. Parkyn, the children have laid down a lawn, planted shrubs, creepers, and plants, which were given by residents, and have formed a rockery. The children have also painted the new flag-pole given by Mr W. J. Willetts, and it is now ready to be erected. A meeting of the Burke's Pass School Committee was held on Wednesday night. There were present: Mr J. Willelts (chairman), Mr J. McKinnon, Mr J. Ballantyne, Mr P. Allan, Mr E. Clark (secretary), and the teacher. Mr G. V/. Parkyn, M.A. Arrangements for the celebration of the King's Silver Jubilee were discussed, and it was decided to hold the celebrations on Tuesday, May 7. A Silver Jubilee tree will be planted, items will be given by the children, and each child will be presented with a book. It was arranged to have tho school flag-pole erected during the Easter holidays. Mrs P. Allan is attending the Waitohi School jubilee celebrations. Mrs W. E. Judkins (Onmaru) is spending the Easter holidays with Mrs G. W. Parkyn, the schooihouse.

STAVELEY Miss Isobel Totty, who is shortly to be married, was the guest at a party given by Mr and Mrs Wm, Norman. During tho evening a compction, arranged by Mr N. Hadlcr, was won by Miss Totty. Songs were sung by Miss A. Syme, Mr G. Rountree, and Mr N. J-ladler, and instrumental music was played by Miss A. Syme and Messrs Arthur and Jim Langridge. In the light of a bon-fire, a number of games were played. Round the supper table, Miss Totty received gifts from all tbose present, who were as follows:—Mr and Mrs W. Norman, Mr and Mrs C. N. Totty, Mr and Mrs S. T. Goldsmith, Mrs Noorie (Otago), Mrs T. PEEL FOREST The annual meeting of the Peel Forest Hall Committee was held in the library. Mr D. Rutherford presided, and there was a fair meeting of residents. The annual report showed that after paying the final instalments on the new piano a credit balance of £6 18s Cd remained. It was decided to rent the hall to the Workers' Educational Association and the rifle club at the same terms as last year. The election of officers resulted as follows; Chairman, Mr E. A. Foden; secretary, Mr W. A. Macphail; treasurer, Mr D. G. Rutherford; committee, Messrs J. D. Acland, G. S. Boyd, G. Cox, E. S. Foden, S. W. Marsh, W. A. Macphail, and D. G. Rutherford. The sum of £1 was given to the Peel Forest Library.
