ASHBTJRTON PERSONAL The Rev. G. B. Hinton and Mrs Hinton, who have been spending a short holiday at Timaru, have rei turned to Ashburton. Mr S. G. Macfarlane, of Ashburton, who is representing the basketball referees of Ashburton, at the first annual conference of the New Zealand Basketball Referees' Association, at Wellington, has been elected the first president of this newly-constituted association. Mr J. MacMillan (president of the Ashburton Rugby Referees' Association), who represented the association at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Referees' Association, at Invereargill, returned to Ashburton yesterday afternoon. Woman Slightly Injured i Mrs Smart, of Temuka, struck her I head on an interior fitting and sustained a cut on her forehead when the motor-car in which she was travelling northwards along the Maronan road on Saturday morning skidded in some loose shingle. She was admitted to Warwick Private Hospital. The car did not capsize and none of the other occupants was injured. Mrs Smart returned to her home last evening. Bible Class Camp The activities of the camp of the Canterbury Baptist young women's Bible classes, at Ashburton, were concluded on Monday. A study circle and a sing-song were held in the morning, and also the Richard Baker Trust essay competition. The senior prize was won by Miss Esther Heaney and the junior by Miss Peggy Newman. The subject was "Story of wljeat from seed to bread and the use made of it by Christ in His teachings." A sports meeting was held in the afternoon. In the evening a special closing meeting was held, when members gave their camp impression:. The camp will be broken up this morning. Itugby Union The management committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met last evening, when Mr H. R. D. Porter (vicepresident) presided! The New Zealand Rugby Union wrote stating that the application for the reinstatement of Bernard Dynes, of Rakaia, had been granted. The Canterbury Rugby Union advised that its selection committee did not desire a match for May 6. Linwood's first grade team had a bye for that date and might be prepared to play at Ashburton, provided that expenses were paid. It was decided to invite Linwood to play a match on May 6.

The Ashburton County Schools' Sports Association made application for four footballs to be used the playing of weekly inter-school competition matches. The applications were granted. The applications of the Lauriston and East Ashburton schools for footballs were granted. It was decided that all players must be registered before the beginning of the competition on Saturday. The playing of matches by the union on the domain oval was discussed, the secretary, Mr G. V. Furby, stating that the Ashburton Sports Association had decided to charge the union £2 2s for the first match and £1 Is for any other matches played on the oval. It was agreed that a midget match, Borough and Allenton v. East and Tinwald, bo played as a curtain-raiser to the senior match on May (i. Railway Passenger Traffic There has been a slight increase in the bookings of railway passenger traffic both north and south from Ashburton during the Easter holidays this year, compared with last year. The total of 1041 persons, who left Ashburton by train, in the highest for some vears. The booking last year was 1027, and in 1393, the total was 671, compared with 634 in 1932. The figures for each day of the Easter holidays, together with those of last year in parenthesis, are as follows: —Thursday 250 (224), Friday 240 (244), Saturday 166 (202), Sunday 290 (206), Monday 95 (91). Mountaineering Trip Two members of the Erewhon branch of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, Messrs J. C. Pattle and H. F. McElrea, returned to Ashburton early yesterday morning, after a successful exploration trip at the headwaters of the Rangitata river. They left Ashburton last Thursday evening by car, motoring as far as the Erewhon station. They followed tho Havelock river by moonlight and camped until daybreak. The following day they tramped to the junction of the Eric and St. Winifred's streams, where a base camp was made. On Saturday and Sunday various peaks of the Main Divide of the Southern Alps were climbed and the perfect weather allowed an excellent panorama embracing Westland, the Tasman Sea, the Mount Cook regions, and peaks in the Waimakariri gorge to be obtained. The climbers returned to the Erewhon station on Monday evening. Basketball

LAURISTON A very satisfactory financial position was revealed at the annual meeting of the Lauriston Social Club. The report stated that successful socials had been held throughout last winter, and that financially, and in all other respects, tlhe club's activities had proved most gratifying. It was agreed to commence this season's socials next Saturday evening, April 27. Mr S. Ashworth was elected chairman for the present season, and Miss D. Maidens was elected secretary and treasurer. The following were apr pointed to the committee: Misses E. Maidens, E. Lemon, and A. Hampton, Messrs D. Hampton, E. McNeil, D. McKenzie, C. McKenzie, A. Lemon, W. Lemon, H. Dalgety, H. Farquhar, and H. McNeill. METHVEN The Methevn Croquet Club officially closed the 1934-35 season on Saturday afternoon. There was a large attendance of members and their friends, and although rain overnight had made the greens a trifle slow, the games and competitions played were most enjoyable. Competitions, played during the afternon resulted as follows: Hurry-scurry, Mesdames Owen and Harvey; golf croquet, Mrs Duff; sheet competition, Mrs K. Aitken; putting competition, Mrs Newman; Aunt Sally, Mrs H. G. Ayers; circle competition, Mrs* S. Robinson. All present were the guests of the club at afternoon tea, after which Mrs W. J. Owen (president) presented the trophies won during the year, as follows: Akarana trophy, for senior championship, Mrs J. Duff; runner-up, Mrs S.~ Robinson; Cooksley trophy, Mrs S. Robinson; senior golf croquet, Mrs Newman; runner-up, Mrs Duff; junior golf, Mrs A. Guthrie; runner-up, Mrs Adams; junior championship, Mrs A. Guthrie: runner-up, Mrs Harvey. The competitions held during the afternoon were a success financially, the club funds benefiting to the extent of more than £3. When presenting the trophies, the president announced that the committee had decided to enlarge the two small greens to make them suitable for match play. The work would be begun at oncc.

RUAPJJNA There was a large attendance at the Ruapuna Hall on Monday evening when a dance was held in aid of the fund for the stone fence which is being erected, around the Anglican Church. Vi/itors were present from Christchurch, Gore, Geraldine and surrounding districts. The hall was tastefully decorated with greenery and pink and green streamers. The competition for the ladies' hand-bag was won by Mrs S. Jones. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss S. Kennedy and Mr M. filler. The Monte Carlo one-step was won by Miss I. Gebbie and Mr J. B. Doyle. Music was played by the Morris Orchestra, ana extras by Miss Hazel Galletly. Mr Stan Clifford was master of ceremonies. The stone fence, which is in keeping with the church, is now on the way to completion. When completed it will, with the church, be a very fine asset to the district. The fence is being erected free of charge by Mr D. Clements, with the help oi labour and donations given by those interested. RAKAIA The Rakaia Football Club held their first weekly social and card evening in St. Mark's Schoolroom on Monday evening, when there was a good attendance. The winners at euchre were Mrs L. L. Street and Mr A. Wells. Music for the dance was played by Miss A. Keane. Mr F. Cornelius was master of ceremonies. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Rakaia Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0.F.. was held in Ihe lodge room on Monday, N.U. Bro. A. H. Woodill, assisted by v.G. Bro. A. Fagan, presided, and there was a good attendance of members and visitors. An official visit whs paid by the Loyal Methven Lodge. Sick pay amounting to £"5 8s 4d was passed for payment in favour of five members. It was decided to invite the Foresters Lodge to a game of cards on May 1.1 After the meeting a social hour was spent, the visitors winning a game ol euchre by 144 points to 138.
