McDonald Smith returned to Christchurch yesterday morning after an absence of about seven weeks in Australia. Mr E. S. Brittenden, district traffic manager of railways, went to Dunedin yesterday. Buck, ethnologist at the Bishop Museum, Honolulu, who has been on a brief holiday visit to the Dominion, left Auckland for Honolulu by the Monterey on Saturday. Mr T. M. Charters was re-elected chairman of the Christchurch Fire Board at the annual meeting last evening. Mr E. H. Andrews was appointed deputy-chairman. Dr. M. S. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr A. G. Cannons was passed at the annual meeting of the Christchurch Centre of the New Zealand Accountants' and Auditors' Association on Monday. Mr Leslie Lefeaux, Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, passed through Christchurch yesterday on his way to Hanmer Springs. He will return to Christchurch In a few days' time. The executive of the Wellington Bowling Centre decided unanimously last evening to nominate the Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C., as vice-pre-sident of the Dominion Bowling Council. Mr A. J. McEldowney, secretary to the Christchurch branch of the Young Men's Christian Association, who left last night for Wellington to attend the national conference of the association, will return on Sunday. Mr N. T. Webb was elected president of the Canterbury Builders' and Contractors' Association at the annual meeting of the association last night in succession to the retiring president, Mr S. J. Moore, who has held office for the last two years. Mr M. Dennehy, who retired some years ago from the position of assistant general manager of the New Zealand Railways, returned to Wellington by the lonic on Monday. after an absence of 12 months spent in visiting Great Britain and the Continent.

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr J. C. Clarkson was carried by the Board of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, yesterday. Mr Clarksoa was for 20 years interested in the college, particularly in assisting students in the judging of fat lambs. Major J. I. Chrystall, formerly of Christchurch and now on leave from his regiment, the 13th-IBth Hussars, stationed at Sialkot, Northwest Frontier, India, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. He is staying with his mother, Mrs W. Chrystall, Colombo street.

Mr H. E. Martin, of Creyke road, Fendalton, received a letter yesterday morning advising that his son» Mr A. J. Martin, who took the racehorse Te Uira, sister to Phar Lap» to England some months ago, was, at the time of writing, a patient ia the Mildmay Memorial Hospital, suffering from pleurisy. He wa» stated to be progressing satisfactorily.

At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Accountants' and Auditors* Association held at Christchurch yesterday, it was decided to send congratulations io Canon C. H. Statham, F.N.Z.A.A., of Dunedin, fahter of Sir Charles Statham, on his attaining his ninetieth birthday. Canon Statham practised in Dunedin as a public accountant for a number of years, until appointed Diocesan Registrar, from which, position be retired about a year ago. He became a member of the associahon more than 25 years ago.

Mr A. St. J. Huddleston, who has been manager of the Masterton branch of the Bank of New SoiUb Wales for a little more than two years, is retiring after 44 ycar» service. Mr Huddleston, who was in charge of the Tokomaru Uay branch of the Bank of New boutn Wales before coming to Masterton. has had a long and interesting career as a banker. While at Masterton, Mr Huddleston has bed handicapped to some extent by »«* different health.
