FALSE ENTRY IN WAGES HOOK

For making a false entry in a wages and lime book, Rene Gerondis, proprietor of a Willis street cafe, was fined .£ls by Mr E. Page, S.M., who said that Ihe entry was a wilfully false one, seltng at nought the whole purpose of the statute. Inspector J. Georgeson, of the Labour Department, said defendant entered in the wages book that a waitress was receiving 30s a week, whereas she was actually receiving only 16s 6d. Mr Stephenson, for Gerondis, said that under the provisions of the new award, the girl, who was employed as a probationer, would have lost her position, but persuaded Gerondis to keep her on at a smaller salary. Mr Georgeson said collusion between workers and employers added to the difficulties of the inspectors.
