SUMNER BOROUGH RATES
The final count of the amount of rates collected by the Sumner Borough Council showed that out of a total levy of £11,082, £9876 had been collected. Though not quite as good as the record of last year, it was considered entirely satisfactory, nearly 90 per cent, being collected.
Several unusual caterpillars have made an appearance in various Devonport gardens during the last few days. Striped in white, black, ;md yellow, the caterpillars are somewhat larger than the usual .specimens and carry long horn-like atennae. They have been identified by Mr R. A. Falla, ornithologist at the War Memorial Museum, as caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly, a species practically unknown in New Zealand, except in 1894, ■when they were common at Wanganui. The caterpillars are frequently found on the so-called "duck" or "swan" plant, the present abnormal season apparently being favourable for their development. Mr Falla considers that large numbers of the handsome brown and black butterflies will be seen within the next Jew weeks.
