+ SWIMMING The Lyttelton Amateur Swimming Club will hold novelty events at Corsair Bay this evening, commencing at 7.30. Sailing The Christchurch Sailing and Power Boat Club will hold a keel yacht race _>n Saturday afternoon from lyttelton to Port Levy for the Gough Cup. The race will be started at 3.15 p.m. Rain Mars Picnics Frequent rain showers marred two picnics which were held at Corsair Bay yesterday. These were the North New Brighton School, at which 500 were present, and the Amberley School picnic, at which 150 were present. Harbour Light Theatre Australia's first modern comedy, set to music, with a laugh in every note, is the description applied to "The Hayseeds," which is to be shown at the Harbour Light Theatre this afternoon and evening, and to-morrow afternoon and evening. It is an uproariously funny story of the Hayseed family, who accompany Joe Hayseed and his bride on their honeymoon in Sydney. The cast is headed by Cecil Kellaway. Shirley Dale, Katie Towers, and Tal Ordell. A special attraction in the featurettes is a 20-minute review of Australian vaudeville. Obituary News was received in Lyttelton yesterday of the death, as the result of an accident, of Mr William Halliday. forester to the Lyttelton Borough Council. He died at Papatowai, in the Catlins district, where he had been spending his annual holidays with his cousin, Mr R. Fraser. Mr Halliday, who was about 59 years of age, was born at Balclutha, where he attended school. After working for about 14 years as a mariiet gardener near Christchurch, he was appointed forester to the Lyttelton Borough Council, a position he held for 30 years. He was a highly valued servant of the council, and the thoroughness of his work earned warm praise both from members of the various councils which have held office during that time and from visitors to the port. Mr Halliday was a member of the Unanimity Masonic Lodge, Lyttelton. Mrs Halliday, formerly Miss Annie Morgan, who survives her husband, resides at Heathcote Valley, and there is a son, Mr Robert Halliday, and a daughter, Miss Myrtle Halliday. Two brothers. Cr. G. Halliday and Mr J. Halliday, reside in Lyttelton. A message received last night stated that Mr Halliday had gone out rabbit shooting yesterday morning. As he did not return a search was made, and his body was discovered.
