CHAMPIONSHIPS OF NEW ZEALAND CANTERBURY MAN'S DECISIVE WIN AUCKLAND RETAINS THE YALDHURST SHIELD (PUESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.} AUCKLAND, February 20. A splendid victory by Miss Edna Rainey in the 100 yards women's free style, the success of Miss Judith Webster in the 220 yards women's breaststroke, and the Auckland team's win in the 500 yards flying squadron relay and the water polo final enabled Auckland to retain the. Yaldhurst Shield. Auckland's score was increased with every race but the 440 yards men's free style, the total being 59 points. The scores of other centres were:—Otago 25, Canterbury 14, Southland 12, South Auckland 10, Wellington eight, Hawke's Bay six, Wanganui five, Taranaki one. The 440 yards men's contest resulted in a decisive win by six yards for the Canterbury champion, D. H. Symes. The runner-up was R. Simon (South Auckland). R. Watkins (Hawke's Bay) was third. The only Aucklander to qualify for the final was N. Crump, and after being to the fore for the greater part of the distance, he lost strength, and finished a poor last. Symes's time, smin 21sec, while creditable for him, was 7 3-ssec slower than G. Bridson's New Zealand record.
Miss Rainey's success ; aroused tremendous enthusiasm among the large crowd. The youngest competitor, she is only 17 years of age, and not a month ago she won the Dominion intermediate girls' championship at Timaru. She sacrificed her intermediate status to compete in this senior meeting, and is the first girl to win the title of both divisions in the same season. Southland's representative, Miss Nancy Basstian,. fulfilled expectations that the Auckland girls would find her difficult to beat. She filled second place, and was only a foot away. Miss Rainey's time, 65 4-ssec, was the fastest in which the title has been won, but it was slower than her New Zealand intermediate record of 65 1-5 sec, which she registered last season. By her victory in the women's breaststroke, Miss Judith Webster (Auckland) retained this title for the third consecutive year. She won easily from her only opponent, Miss Jean Thomson (Auckland), and the lack of keen competition probably accounted for the slowness of her time, 3min 30 2-ssec, in comparison with her record, 3min 23 3-ssec.
