ADDINGTON MARKET

' KEEN DEMAND FOR EWES IMPROVED BEEF MARKET (BT OOE COMMZBCIAL EDITOR.) Entries were of normal size at yesterday's Addington market, except in the store-sheep section, where the penning •was the largest of the year. A mild rain fell during the earlier part of the day, and this had a useful effect on the competition for some classes of stock. However, the rain was by no means general from Christchurch southwards, and this knowledge tended to restrain bidding by farmers from these districts. The store sheep entry, in spite of its size and the moderate class of the entry, sold at improving values throughout, the competition for all classes of good ewes being keen. All excent the best of the store lambs were easier, but those ready for fattening feed maintained recent rates. Fat sheep sold at recent rates, there being a tendency towards better prices for butchers' sheep. A smaller entry of fat cattle met with an improved sale for the small proportion of prime sorts, but there was little change in other classes. There was also a little competition in the store cattle market. Fat pigs, due to a small entry, met with a spirited sale, but an over-sup-ply in the store pens realised lower values. STORE LAMBS The entry of store lambs was again exceptionally heavy. Station drafts again comprised the bulk, and although there were no outstanding lines quality generally was a little better than last week. There was a smaller attendance of buyers than for some sales, the South Canterbury representation being smaller, and consequently the bidding was not so keen. There was a slight easing for the better sorts, but inferior sorts were down by about a shilling a head. Apart from the small number of southern %'ers operating there is a shade of u..."crtainty, as to the future of the export market, and this had an effect on the sale of all lambs except those ready to put on rape. Top price was 15s 5d for a pen of 77 three-quarterbreds sent in from Medbury. Values were:— Best rape lambs 15s Id to 15s sd. Medium rape lambs, 12s 10d to 14s lOd.

STOKE SHEEI' The store sheep yarding was the biggest so far this year, and the sale throughout was an excellent one. The entry was made up almost entirely of adult ewes, among which there were very few really attractive lots. The sale opened with prices round about the same as those ruling last week, but as it progressed bidding became much keener, values over the latter half of the sale being considerably better than last week. There is no doubt that yesterday's rain had a good deal to do with the improved demand. An outstanding line of 137 six and eighttooth halfbred ewes from Waikari made 20s. Included in the entry were some good two-tooth ewes, and they were keenly sought after. One line of 155 Corriedales from Swannanoa made as much as 30s, and the balance of them sold at 29s 3d. Halfbreds made up to 29s 3d. There were only a few pens of wethers, and they sold at prices ranging from 12s 3d to 15s. Values were:— Good two-tooth Corriedale ewes, 29s 3d to 30s. FAT LAMBS A number of consignments of prime lambs from the West Coast were included in the entry, and assisted to improve the general quality. However, the average quality was mediocre, the proportion of light lambs again being heavy. The sale was a free one for all best quality lambs, which were very firm at the reduced schedule rates—a farthing per lb. In some cases the export limit was exceeded. The absence of one prominent buying firm •did not appear to make much differ-

ence in the values recorded. The bulk of the lambs sold at 7£d per lb, and seconds at 7d. Top price of the sale was 29s Id for a pen of 12 in a line of 80 sent forward by T. Mallinson (Rotomanu, West Coast). The Te Kinga Land Company (West Coast) sold 28 of a draft of 306 at 28s 4d, and A. E. Birdling (Birdling's Flat) a pen of 10 at the same price. The entry totalled 3800 head, compared with 3500 last week. Values were:—

FAT CATTLE The entry of fat cattle was substantially smaller than last week, comprising 410 head, compared with 505. There was, if anything, a smaller representation of prime cattle than at the recent sale, the pens of well-fin-ished steers being few and far between. The Peninsula assisted in providing the small proportion of this class, and there was one outstanding truck lot from the Eastern District of Otago. Quite three-fourths of the steers were no more than medium to good stores, and under ordinary feed conditions would not have appeared in the market. The cows and heifers were very mixed in quality, the entry of cows being disfigured by a lot of Jersey-bred rubbish that made auctioneers perspire to sell at from 35s to 50s a head. The small display of prime beef caused an immediate firming for that class, and values on last sale for the best quality were up by 15s a head.

The big proportion of medium cattle showed a very small improvement and inferior sorts were sold at the preceding week's rates. The best price of the sale was £ll 12s 6d for two steers of a truck lot from R. and T. Kirk (Pomahaka, Southland), and an exceptional cow from T. Gough (Greendale) made £lO 2s 6d, the highest price for a cow for some months. A West Coast heifer from Te Kinga sold at £7 17s 6d. The sale towards the end was very hard for ordinary and inferior sorts, and there were some passings. : Best steer and heifer beef sold at •up to 24s 6d per 1001b, good from 20s to 235, heavy from 17s 6d to 19s, secondary from 13s to 15s, and rough down to lis. Values were as under: — Extra prime heavy steers to £ll 12s 6d. Prime heavy steers. £8 15s to £9 15s. Medium-weight prime steers, £8 to £9 ss. Medium quality steers, £4 10s to £7 ss.
