PREMIER THEATRE

"MANHATTAN MELODRAMA" j Moving with dramatic power through a series of unusual situations, "Manhattan Melodrama," which opens a three-day season at the Premier Theatre, New Brighton, to-day, takes its place among the greatest pictures of the year. From the opening scenes the picture is absorbing entertainment. One of the most thrilling scenes ever filmed is the prologue, which re-enacts the fire and panic aboard the excursion steamer General Slocum in the New York harbour in 1904—a tragedy in which more than 1000 were killed. Clark Gable, William Powell, and Myrna Loy are the stars, and the story tells of three boys raised from childhood in New York. One becomes a priest, another (Clark Gable) becomes a great gambler, powerful and dramatic figure of the city's night life. The third (William Powell) becomes a district attorney, forced to prosecute his life-long friend for murder. Between, loved by all of them, is Myrna Loy, Broadway playgirl. How they meet their problems through a series of. thrilling sequences makes an entertaining and absorbing story. In addition, a fine array of shorts will also be screened, including a beautiful coloured musical revue entitled "Morocco Nights." Plans for all reserves are at Hudson's, chemist, or telephone theatre. 37-447.
