i ASHBURTON TWO MEN INJURE]) i i William Henry Graham, aged 20, of j Mount Somers, suffered severe internal injuries on Wednesday evening. He j was swept from a motor-cycle which he was riding when he ran into the overhanging load of timber on a lorry, and was admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital, where it was found that an immediate operation was necessary. He was reported last evening to be in a serious condition. His brother, Thomas Graham, who was riding on the pillion seat, v r as slightly injured. The accident occurred in Mount Somers township. The motor-cycle was travelling at the rear of a lorry loaded with timber. The lorry, which was well lighted, was driven by Mr R. Hix. When the lorry pulled up at a gateway some of the overhanging load was jutting out over the road, and the motor-cycle was driven under it, the two men being swept off. W. H. Graham took the full force of the impact on his body. The motor-cycle was not damaged. Swimming: Club Picnic A meeting of members of the East Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club was held on Wednesday evening to arrange a club picnic. It was decided to hold a picnic at Hanging Rock, near Timaru, on Sunday. The mem- I bers will be taken there'by buses, and it is expected that between 40 and 50 members of the club will take part in the excursion. They will leave Ashburton at 8 o'clock on Sundav morning. Tennis Sub-Association A. meeting of the management committee of the Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association was 'held recently, Mr D. A. Lawson presiding. A report was received from a meeting of the Hinds, Willowbv, and Eiffelton clubs, as a result of which the Hinds club had decided to affiiliate to the sub-association. The affiliation was accepted, and it was decided to hold a country players' tournament next year. Arrangements were made for the Gala Cup competition to be held on March £> and 23, entries to close on March 2. The events will comprise men's and women's singles and men's junior in each case. The doubles events will not be held unless there are at least five entries. Permission was granted to the Ashburton Club to play matches against Wai-iti (Timaru) and United (Christchurch) on March 2 and 9. provided it fielded a strong intermediate team for its engagements on both dates. The Te Marae Club was granted permission to play matches against Leeston on February 23 and Geraldine on March 16, the B v. C intermediate match on

the latter date to be played during the week. The secretary (Mr D. E. Harwood) was'instructed to write to the Ellesmere and Malvern Sub-Associations asking for a final decision about the representative matches. A request for a representative match against North Canterbury and Rangiora was held over until details have been received from Ellesmere and Malvern. Mr H. Hawkins (Eiffelton) stressed the advisability of promoting tennis in primary and secondary schools. While the association's finances are limited, the committee expressed its hearty approval of this suggestion, and the hope that some action could be taken in the near future. Lodge Meeting There was a good attendance at Wednesday evening's meeting of Daphne (Rebekah) Lodge, 1.0.0. F. The N.G. (Sister M. Cowan) presided. Three members were reported sick and a ballot on one candidate was satisfactory. It was decided to hold an initiation next month. The secretary presented the half-yearly returns, which were accepted. Supper was served after the lodge had closed.

RAKAIA The monthly meeting of the Rakaia School Committee was hold in the school on Wednesday evening. Mr H. Conway presided over a fair attendance. Mr C. Evison's resignation was received with regret. The Presbyterian Men's Bible Class was granted permission to use the grounds and school for their Easter camp. Accounts amounting to £5 10s 3d were passed for payment. The weekly social afternoon of the Presbyterian Women's Guild to raise money for the bazaar was held at the schoolhouse on Wednesday afternoon. A competition resulted: Mrs G. Shannon 1, Miss Hopweod and Miss Bowden (equal) 2. A humorous recitation was given by Miss M. Ashford, and Mrs Ash ford read some humorous items. Stallholders were appointed for the All Nations fair: Work stall. Misses Stevenson and H. Shannon (Spanish); fancy work, Mesdamcs Nicol and Pye (Ireland); cake stall, Mesdamcs Lee, ! Newman, and Miss Newman (Scotland); fishpond, Miss Ashford (Norgegian); jumble stall, Mrs G. Shannon and Miss T. Clark (Indian); IHd stall, Mrs A. Wilson and Miss Oaklev (Russian); refreshment room, Mesdamcs C. Shannon, F. Greenaway, Miss Boyd, and helpers (Rumanian gypsies). A bring-and-buy- aftarnoon tea realised £1 8s 3d. A vole of thanks was passed to Mrs Nicol and the hostesses, Mesdames Liddington and Greenaway. Mr S. Wilson presided at the monthly meeting of the Rakaia Bov Scouts' Committee on Wednesday. It was decided to erect a scout hall on the section next to St. Mark's schoolroom. A start has already been made to clear the site.
