FAILURE OF PRODUCE FIRM
MANAGER IN INDIA "COLLI) NOT FACE TANGLE" (Received January 31, 8.40 p.m.) LONDON, January 31. At the inquest into the death of If. C. Whitehouse, general manager in India of Strauss and Company, Ltd., produce brokers, it was stated I hat he had been depressed since he received instructions from the head office in London to stop payment of creditors and cease trading' because of financial embarrassment. He left a letter saying, "I cannot face the tangle." Nervousness prevails on the seed and grain markets of Bombay. Madras and Calcutta. A petition has been filed for the compulsory winding-up of the company and the official receiver has been appointed as provisional liquidator. The winding-up petition is due for hearing on February 11. In the meantime the firm has been suspended from the Baltic Exchange, and its name deleted from membership of the Corn Trade Association. " No official information is available about the extent of the losses, which in London, at least, are believed to be confined to strong institutions.
