INDIAN TRIBESMEN IN BATTLE
• FIVE KILLED santhalis use poisoned ARROWS (Received January 31, 8.30 p.m.) CALCUTTA, January 30. Five were killed and many injured in a fierce battle between Santhalis, the aboriginal inhabitants of Bihar province, and warlike Gurkhas, .in the village of Sonagarha in the Singhbhum district. Two thousand Santhalis were holding I'estival dances when Gurkha miners appeared, creating a disturbance and brandishing Kukris. Police efforts at reconciliation failed and the enraged Santhalis summoned fellow tribesmen by drums. The. latter, armed with bows and poisoned arrows, attacked and routed the Gurkhas, killing four. One Santhali was killed in mistake for a Gurkha.
