The Southland championship swimming carnival, held at the tepid baths to-night, proved a great success, three records being broken. Miss N. Bas.stian broke her own record for the 100 yards women's tree-style by finishing in 68 2-sseo, while in the 220 yards women's tree-style she took 1U seconds ott her previous record, her time being 2 minutes 55 seconds. The men's champion, P. H. McGruth, lowered the 440 yards record, his time being smin 53 1 -ssec. A. W. VVesney, the diving champion. P. H. McGrath. and Miss Basstian have been selected to ta!;e part m the NewZealand championships at Auckland. The selected swimmers have been breaking New Zealand standard times during their trials.
