Comfortable Victory Sir Spear, second favourite, but well backed, had a comfortable win in the hurdles. He lay handy to the paceI makers, Headland and Conference, to the turn, when he assumed command j to run home an easy winner, with Headland weakening to a moderate third. Ythan was fourth, and Blacksmith further back. The pacemakers cut each others' throats all the way; but while a change in tactics may have been to the advantage of Conference, he would have been troubled to beat the winner. Ythan, the favourite, was well back early, and while he made up some ground he never looked like getting any money. Won All the Way The Maiden Race favourite, Reipar, drew No. 1 and scored an all-the-way win. Lady Hoariri went with him for a furlong, Dawn Princess heading the bunch; but Reipar drew right away over the last three furlongs, Dawn Princess hanging on for second from Eara, who was making up ground well at the finish. Pavloff was fourth, followed by Windscreen, Makoi. and Amante. The winner's form suggested his success, which was very comfortably achieved. 'Dawn Princess appeared a trifle sore. Eara was finishing well, and should be suited by a longer journey. The others showed nothing worthy of comment. Juvenile Race Round Up, who drew No. 2 in the Juvenile Handicap, began well, and though he was headed in the first fur-
long by Surprise Item and Good Conduct, he was always travelling well. He allowed this pair to lead him until making for the straight, where Surprise Item began to stop. Round Up soon passed Good Conduct and ran home a comfortable winner. Prevail came through in the last furlong for second, just beating Lowenburg, who came right from the rear. Good Conduct was • fourth, followed by Sergia, Grateful, and Matrimony. Hound Up was too smart and seasoned for his opponents. Prevail drew No. 1, but she failed to jump away or she might have been very hard to beat. Lowenburg was, as usual, slow to find his feet, and he was a bad last on the turn. He put in some great work towards the finish, but was giving away too much ground. Good Conduct and Surprise Item showed pace and should improve. Fersen's Success The Victory Hack Handicap, for apprentice riders, saw Fersen a hot order. He got off well and lay in behind the pacemakers, St. Clara and Silk Sox. to the straight, where he challenged and ran home a comfortable- winner from Silk Sox, who finished better than St. Clara. Boudoir was a moderate fourth. Fersen, who claimed a 51b allowance, aldays had the drop on the pacemakers, who did not assist their prospects by cut-throat tactics. Favourites Fail The favourites in the Tayforth Hack Handicap, Glenvane and Colenso, were poorly placed early. Jubilee Song and Onewhetu jumped away well, and were always in front of Wasteland, the latter being actually the first to show out. Glenvane and Colenso were a fair way back by the time they settled down, and although Glenvane got a good run through on the rails from the six furlongs to the half he got no further opening until the straight, by which time the leader was heading for home a winner. Jubilee Song really won comfortably, as Onewhetu weakened and only just held on for second from Glenvane, with Wasteland fourth, followed by Colenso, Midian, and Bonnie Vale. The winner showed form at Wellington; but he was fortunate to get away so well. Glenvane ran wide into the straight, otherwise he would no doubt have been second. Colenso was never travelling very freely, but Midian came well. Wasteland ran a good race. Black Man was prominent to the half, where he got chopped back.
Race for the Cup The Wanganui Cup provided a good race, with a very close finish between Aga Khan and Speed. Tiger Gain made the pace, and was soon joined by Red Manfred, yith Aga Khan and Speed following. Red Manfred led into the straight, but he was quickly in trouble, and the finish lay between Aga Khan and Speed. It was a keen struggle, and Aga Khan, on the inside berth, just won. Red Manfred was a moderate third, with % Tiger Gain fourth, followed by Pango, Eminent, and Plateau. Red Manfred was a warm favourite, but he had no chance with his two final challengers, who always had the drop on him. Decisive Win Porotiti scored a very decisive win in the open sprint, while the favourite, Mother Superior, could not finish better than a poor fourth. From an excellent start Navaho, Mother Superior, and Porotiti ran together in the lead to the turn from Bodyline and Hunt the Slipper, Caaland whipping in. Navaho was done at three furlongs and Porotiti drew out clear into the straight. He was not afterwards threatened. Cadland came with a rattle at the finish, followed by Hunt the Slipper and Navaho. The winner ran away from his opponents. Mother Superior did not impress at all ov<er the last two furlongs. Full Throttle Scores | Merry Way proved a false favourite in the concluding event, never being in a winning position. Collodian and Full Throttle set a fast pace from Arena. Collodian was beaten on the turn, and Full Throttle drew clear. He was never afterwards likely to lose, winning comfortably from Arena, with Merry Way a fair third. The winner put up a smart performance. Queen's Pride finished well, after being last to the turn.
