WILD GUY WINS CUP {sriCIAI. TO THE FE*33.) DUNEDIN, January 31. The Forbury Park Trotting Club's summer meeting was opened in line but windy weather. The track was in good order, but the dust was troublesome at times. There was a good attendance and the totalisator handled £15,951 against £12,809 on the first day last year, an increase of £3142. An enquiry into the running of Elvo in the Dunedin Cup was adjourned till Saturday. Results:— VAUXHALL HANDICAP, Of Jill sovs; second lior-e -■> sovs, and lliinl horse 10 S"\s from slake. NOTES ON THE RACING From End to End Sonoma King won the Vauxhall Handicap practically from end to end. After a false start Lady Sonoma got away on the fly, but broke badly inside two furlongs, and Sonoma King took up the running from Travis Pringle and Patty Todd. Sonoma King drew right away, and with five furlongs to go his nearest attendant was Pally Todd, who was followed at intervals by Parrish Chimes, Lady Sonoma, and Bosun. Going down the back Kotinga moved up fast and displaced Patty Todd two furlongs from home. The latter broke, and Sonoma King held a comfortable lead into the "traighi, but just lasted long enougn to stall ofT Kotinga. There was a gap of several lengths to Patty Todd and Lady Sonoma. The winner trotted faultlessly, ancl is likely to do still better. Kotinga "ave a solid display, but the others shaped poorly. The favourite, Princess Onvx, was never really dangerous. Mother's Boy, Kilbirnie Dan, and Jacob broke at the start.
Southland-trained Winner Lynwood took charge at the end of three ftn-longs in the Southland Handicap and held his lead to score decisively. Awa Dillon made the running before Lynwood took charge, and led into the last lap closely attended by Dinner Bell. Red Gold, Royal de dro, and Awa Dillon. There was little change in the order three furlongs from home, but Dinner Bell was beaten at the far turn, and Lynwood was first into the straight from Red Gold, Royal de Oro, and Awa Dillon. The leader finished solidly and was going away at the finish from Royal de Oro, who just beat off Awa Dillon. Red Gokl was close up fourth. Then came Irish Peach and Full Hand. The winner is by Waverley from the New Zealand Cup winner Win Soon, and is a solid type, who will go on improving. The hot favourite, Graham Direct, broke early, and though he showed a lot of speed when he settled down again lie had no chance of winning. The Favourite Wins Iraq and Dundee monopolised the betting in the Electric Handicap, but when it came to racing the former was the only one in the picture. Iraq led for three furlongs, when he was displaced by Dundee, who carried on (lie running to within three furlongs from home from Iraq, Scot Free, Gay Sister, and Golden Cross. Dundee broke badly, and Iraq drew right away r.nd had the finish to himself. Scot Free tangled at the top of the straight, but got down quickly, and outstayed Golden Cross. Gay Sister a'as in fourth place and Olive Rey next. Dundee might have made it harder for the winner had he not left his feet, but none of the others had any chance. Elvo Disappoints Two hot fancies in Elvo and Sure were beaten out of a place in the Dunedin Cup. but it was a good race. Wild Guy waited in behind the pacemaker, Waress. until two and a half furlongs from home and then came away to win well, though he had nothing in reserve. Waress made the early running from Major Lind, Great Logan. Todd Lonzia, and Sure, and (here was little change over the first mile, the field being in fairly close I order with the exception of Native Chief and Craganour. who broke badly at the start. With five furlongs to go Waress was still making the pace from Major Lind, who immediately broke, Wild Guy, Todd Lonzia, Great Logan. Cloudy Range, Sure, and Elvo, who was covering a lot of ground. Waress held her position down the back, where Sure got in a pocket on the rails. Wild Guy was first into the straight from Waress, Great Logan. Avernus, Todd Lonzia, and Sure, and the leader finished on well to beat Avernus decisively. Great Logan and Sure were close up, and Todd Lonzia and Waress next. This marked the winner's first success over two miles and he was driven a splendid race. Sure had a bad run over the last half-mile and was unlucky. The dust made it difficult to view the race clearly at times, and though Elvo appeared to meet some interference in Ihe last lap her display was not in keeping with her best form. An enquiry was held into her running and was adjourned until Saturday. Cloudy Range ran a patchy race but Great Logan was always in the picture, and Todd Lonzia was not disgraced.
I'rincc Harvester Improves Prince Harvester showed his partiality for the course by taking charge shortly after the start in the Otago Handicap and holding his lead to the finish. He began unevenly but was soon making the running from Kippagh, Lee Boy, Billy Sunday, and Golden Bingen. The order was the same at the end of a mile, but at the far turn Kippagh broke and Prince Harvester led into the straight from Billy Sunday, Lee Boy, and Kotinga. In a good finish Prince Harvester just stalled off a strong challenge by Chiming Wrack after breaking almost on the post. Chiming Wrack made up a lot of ground from the top of the straight, but the unlucky horse was Kotinga, who was sideways on when the barj rier was released. She trotted brilliantly to finish third and looked to be a good thing beaten. Gyrate made up his handicap very fast but could | not get through until his chance was hopeless. The Field Outclassed Chechahco outclassed the others in the Musselburgh Handicap. He was last three furlongs from home, but was being driven very confidently, and eventually won going away from his field. Dundee made the running for a mile from Battlefield, Full Hand, Amonos, and Guy Junior. Going into the last lap Dundee was still the pacemaker, closely attended by Battlefield, All Sunshine, Full Hand, and Guy Junior. Dundee broke two furlongs from home and Battlefield led into the straight from Guy Junior and Chechahco. Once the leaders straightened up Chechahco shot to the front and won full of running. Guy Junior stayed on too well for All Sunshine. Battlefield was a fair fourth. Nothing had a look in with the winner, but All Sunshine spoilt her chance by breaking at the start and again twice in the race. She also covered a lot of unnecessary ground. Kibo Beaten Kibo was at a cramped price for the King George Handicap, but she doubled her handicap at the start by getting away badly, and had to be content with third money. Wise Guy began brilliantly and was never headed. Over the last mile the race developed into a contest between Wise Guy, Llewellyn's Pride, and Kibo, who had run into third position at the end of half a mile. They raced in close order
to the home turn, where Kibo, who was running about three sulkies' width out, lost a bit of ground, and Wise Guy finished on gamely to beat Llewellyn's Pride by half a head, Kibo, coming on again, in third place, and Raider a moderate fourth. Wise Guy's ability at the start stood to him at the finish, but had Kibo been judiciously handled she would probably have won even allowing for the ground she lost at the start. A Bad Start The Flying Handicap was marred by a bad start and the favourite, Cloudy Range, was badly interfered with by John Jinks, who broke and came back on him. Dusolina also swerved at the start and interfered with several horses. Priceless led out from Colonial Boy and they were attended at the end of three furlongs by John Noble and Great Logan. The order was unchanged at the end of five furlongs, and going down the back John Jinks made a fast run. Priceless was first into the straight from John Noble, Colonial Boy, and Great Logan, and in a slashing finish Great Logan got up to beat Colonial Boy by a long neck. Major Lind finished well in third place and John Noble was close up fourth after looking like a winner at the distance. Great Logan's win was well overdue, but it did not surprise in view of his recent showings. Cloudy Range made a wonderful effort to overcome his initial handicap and was apparently a good thing beaten. ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY (PRESS ASSOCIATION I'ELEGBAIt.) DUNEDIN, January HI.
