.♦ RANGIORA J'EItSONAL Mr H. A. Bennett (circuit steward) has been appointed to represent the Rangiora Methodist Circuit at the annual conference of Methodist circuits to be held at Dunedin shortly. Vital Statistics There has been little variation in the registrations of births, deaths, and marriages in the Rangiora district last month when compared with those lor the corresponding month last year. Births and marriages show a decrease of one, while deaths remain the same for both periods. The figures l'or January are as follows (.the figures for the corresponding month last year being given in parenthesis): Births t> (.7), deaths 6 <G>, marriage 0 (.1). Methodist Circuit At the quarterly meeting of the Rangiora Methodist Circuit the Rev. T. Coatsworth presided. The quarterly report and financial statement presented by Mr C. S. Ayers (circuit steward) showgd that the church work was progressing Satisfactorily. It was reported thSl harvest thanksgiving services would be held at Rangiora. Southbrook, and Raithby in March. Reports were received from the Bible classes and Sunday school, and disclosed that the work among the young people was being carried out in an efficient manner. Sympathy was expressed with four families who had suffered bereavement during the quarter. Special reference was made to the fine work of the home and foreign missions secretaries. It was agreed to hold the next meeting of the circuit in April. Borough Electoral Roll The main electoral roll for the Rangiora borough for the next three years closed yesterday, but it will be the greater part of another week before the roll is brought up-to-date. It is not anticipated that the number on the roll will vary a great deal from the total of 1299 in the last publication issued before the municipal elections in 1933. The borough supplementary roll will close on April 17—two weeks before the municipal elections. The number on this roll in 1933 was 69. Borough Rates Although there is only two weeks left before the 10 per cent, penalty is added to all unpaid rates in the borough of Rangiora, there is still approximately £2OOO outstanding. The total rate levied in the borough for the current year was £5758. About £IOO has been received since last Friday, and it is anticipated that from now until the date on which the penalty is to be added, there will be u steady payment oi' rate moneys. Tennis W. P. Sutherland, who was chosen to play in the Rangiora town team against the rest of the North Canterbury Sub-Association at Kaiapoi on Saturday, is not available, and J. D. WAIAI* The public hall was crowded on Wednesday evening', when a farewell social was given to Mr and Mrs E. Stackhouse, who are leaving the district afer residing there tor 15 years. Mr K. Pettigrew spoke in appreciation of Mr and Mrs Stackhouse's many good services to the district, and on" behalf of the residents presented them with a handsome monogrnmmed travelling rug and a substantial cheque. Mr J. L. Macfarlane spoke on behalf of the Collie Club. Mr T. H. Belton on behalf of the Domain Board, and Mr F. Cole on behalf of the Returned Soldiers' Association. Mr Stackhouse suitably responded. Dance music was played by the Waiau Band, and songs were sung' • Miss Mercer and Messrs L. A. Whitham and M. Rogers. KOTHKRHA.M Mrs E. B. Moore, president of the Rotherham Croquet Club, was the guest of the club members, when a very pleasant afternoon was spent in games and competitions. After afternoon tea. Mrs Moore, who is shortly leaving' to take up her residence in Kaitaia. North Auckland, was presented with a gift from the club members, with every good wish for health and prosperity in her new home. Miss C. Boag presented Mrs Moore with a bouquet of sweet peas. Mrs Moore briefly responded. The winners of the competitions were:—One ball break, Mrs Edwards; 20-mmute game, Mrs Edwards and Mrs Walsh. The total rainfall for the month of January, 1835, was 1.32 inches, as compared with 5.16 inches for the same period in 1934. Ram fell on nine days during the month, the heaviest fall being on January 8. when 31 points was recorded. HORNBY A meeting of St. David's Presbyterian Flower Show Committee was presided over by Mr H. Williams, and there was a full attendance of members. Final arrangements for the flower show were completed. The secretary advised that Mr H. S. Kyle, M.P., had accepted the invitation to declare the show officially opened at 2 p.m. oil Saturday, February 9. Miss Kitty Walsh, "Fairhall." Spicer, Hornby, has returned home. Mrs Roy McGregor and Miss Betty McGregor, Leslie's road. Hornby, are spending a holiday at New Brighton. Mr and Mrs S. Lennox, Hornby, have left, for a holiday at New Brighton. PREBBLETON Two cricket matches will be played during the week-end. one against the Halswell Club, to be played in the Halswell Domain, and the other in the Prebbleton ground, against the telephone exchange team. The Prebbleton team will be picked from the following players:—H. Cherry, C. Hampton, C. Hands, H. Goodwin, W. Downey, A. Giles, P. Barr, J. Barr, P. Smith, A. Smith, J. Smith, G. Sutherland, H. A grass fire started in the school grounds on Wednesday afternoon, and burned through the boys' part of the playground before it was put under control. No damage was done.
