NELSON NEWS

PROTECTION OP BUSH RESERVES PATROLS TO GUARD AGAINST 1 FIRE i ______ , (RICUL TO TBI SRJSI.) NELSON, January 17. The Nelson City Council has authorised the city engineer to arrange for the patrol of the council's bush reserves during the dry summer months as a preventive measure against the possibility of fires. Cr. Washbourn introduced the matter, when he asked if it would not be wise to have strategic points on the council's bush reserves patrolled during the dry weather. He pointed out that there were many campers about and there was a serious fire risk while the grass and undegrrowth were so dry. The city engineer, Mr J. G. Littlejohn, expressed the opinion that it would only need a fire to start near Roding river with a favourable wind to clean out the bush. Nevertheless, it - would be difficult to request people to keep off the beautiful scenic reserves. Cr. Washbourn: The reserves are so valuable that they are worth spending something on during dry weather. He moved that the engineer be authorised to arrange for their patrol Cr. G. L. Page seconded the motion, which was carried. It was reported to the council that the city engineer had completed the estimates for the proposed Roding river water supply scheme. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the council next Thursday to consider the report and estimates. In the meantime, the engineer's estimates are to be forwarded to Mr Williams, the consulting engineer for the work.
