(SPECIAL TO THE I'EESS.) \ INVERCARiGILL, January 3. First Appearance Palatinate, who was making his first appearance at the meeting, made amends for his unlucky defeat at Wyndham in the Gladstone Highweight Handicap, for which he was a good favourite. He raced in third place to the straight, and then romped away from Valiska, who made most of the running, and just stalled off Golden King on the post. Honest Maid was prominent for six furlongs, but iinished well back. Makarewa Trot Royal Drive and Vacation led into the straight in the Makarewa Trot, and the former was going like a winner when he broke inside the distance. The favourite, Ozanam, was third into the straight, and i beat off a strong challenge by Moko Child. Vacation made practically > all the running, and just failed in the last few yards. Won all the VVjy Cherry Queen repeated her first day's form in the Shorts Handicap, when she : led all the way. and won without any trouble. Guarantee was again slow away, ant! (hough he improved, he was never a possibility with the winner, and was all out to head Unseen on the posl Won on the I'ost Fourth into the straight in the New Year Handicap, Colossian made a bold bid for success, but Night-form, who followed him throughout, got up 1o beat him on the post. Broken Rule lost a good position early and finished fast in third place. Daring Deed, Bay Biddy, and Madam Pompadour were leaders to the straight, and the lastnamed ran her best race to date to finish close up, fourth. First Song again got away badly, and was never a possibility. Great Shot Runs Well Great Shot led all the way in the Southland Handicap. He streaked away to a good lead early, and after being given a breather at the halfmile, he came right away from Hunting Go in the straight, and finished full of running. Hunting Go was
