LONG SERVICE

UNION COMPANY OFFICER RETIRES PRESENTATION MADE TO AIR WALTER GREEN [THE TRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, December 25. The retirement on superannuation on December 31 of Mr Walter Green, controller of accounts for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd., and the appointment of Mr F. Turner, of the company's head office staff, to the position as from January 1, 1935, are announced. Mr Green joined the service of the company on February 1, 1884. as cashier at the Wellington branch, and in January, 1885, was transferred to j Levuka in the Fiji group. In April, 1886, he was transferred to the head office, then at Dunedin, and in March, 1887, was appointed accountant at the' Sydney branch of the company. In May, 1892, he was transferred back to the head office as assistant accountant. In August, 1905, he was promoted to accountant, and in April, 1909, was appointed comptroller of accounts, which position he holds until his retirement. On June 7, 1934, Mr Green was appointed a director of the company, and although he is severing his services in an active capacity with the company, he will still continue to act as a member of the board.

Mr Green, who is a foundation member of the New Zealand Society ot Accountants, was president of that society during the year 1920-21. At a gathering of heads of departments, the managing director (Mr N. S. Falla), on behalf of his colleagues and himself, presented Mr Green with a handsome silver salver suitably inscribed, and a clock for Mrs Green. Mr Falla made eulogistic references to Mr Green's long and faithful service with the company of just on 51 years. Mr Falla's remarks were endorsed by the general manager (Mr J. W. Matthewson) and the other speakers present. 1

Mr Green made a suitable reply and expressed thanks on behalf of Mrs Green and himself.
