Whether it was the whale which attacked a launch in Tory Channel, or another, cannot be known, but four Wellington boys and two rowboat fishermen saw an unusually large whale close inshore at Makara recently. The boys were fishing from the rocks when a whale was seen in fairly deep water just outside the rocks. They were astonished at its size seen at such close range, and were more astonished when, after a time, it left the rocks, dived, and reappeared, spouting, apparently making a straight lin« for two fishermen in a boat some distance from the shore. The fishermen were evidently quite as astonished, and not nearly so comfortably placed, and hauled up their gear in a hurry and made for the shore. The whale was visible at intervals for about half an hour. A letter suggesting that the period fixed for trapping opossums be changed from July-August to the month of October was received by the Wellington Acclimatisation Society this week from Mr W. Ure Eketahuna. One of the reasons given was that the later month would save 70 per cent, of the young opossums. It was decided to forward the suggestions to half a dozen reliable trappers for their opinions.
