SUGGESTION FOR IMPROVING ACCESS Describing the Christchurch Tramway Board's loop on Cashmere road, near the Barrington street bridge, as a "death trap," Cr. W. W. Scarff announced at a meeting of the Heathcote County Council last evening that he had had a conference with the chairman of the board on the subject, and that there were prospects of having the position improved. Cr. ScarfE said that the trouble ] was that the Tramway Board, with its lines and loop, had taken the whole of the road. When one tram was waiting at the loop to pass another, access to the bridge was almost blocked, and a motorist did not dare to drive on until the conductor waved to him. Cr. ScarfE said he had suggested to the chairman of the board that the council should give the board a piece of land on the river side of Cashmere road, on which the loop could be placed. The chairman replied that he thought if the council did that, the board would be able to manage the rest. Cr. C. Flavell (the chairman) said that with the loop in its present position trams practically overlapped Barrington street. On Cr. Scarff's motion, it was decided to offer the Tramway Board sufficient land on' the river side of Cashmere road for the loop to be moved, thereby giving better access to the Barrington street bridge.
