<{> TIMARU STAR SWIMMING CLUB The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Star Amateur Swimming Club:—-Patron, Mr de Lacey Cameron; president, Mr A. G. Knowles; vice-presidents, Messrs Hugh Fraser, C. W. Cameron, R. A. Rodgers. T. W. Satterthwaite, T. Forrester, and A. Dodd; club captain, Mr G. Macdonald; vice-captain, Mr W. Ayres; secretary and treasurer, Mr T. Shivas; committee, Messrs G. Macdonald, H. Clark. G. Adking, A. Reid, H. Hooper, J. Brown, J. Roller, T. Shivas; delegate to South Canterbury Swimming Centre, Mr A. Provan; starter. Mr H. Clark. Subscriptions were fixed at 3s for seniors and Is 6d for juniors. Trophies were awarded as follows: — Cullen Shield, W. Ayres; Bonham Cup, W. Lillico. West End Harriers I The West End Harrier Club closed I its season on Saturday night, when prizes won were presented at the annual dinner. Mr J. Gillon, the president, presided. The prize list was as follows: —Club championship cup and miniature, C. Langrish. Sealed handicap: W. Wilson 1, D. Gillon 2. West End Ratepayers' Cup and miniature: W. Wilson 1, N. McCambridge 2, C. Langrish fastest time. Mayo Cup for attendance: I. Gillon. High Schools' Board The Timaru High Schools' Board of Governors-met to-day, Mr S. D. Mason presiding. The headmistress of the Girls' High School, Miss J. R. Barr, reported that Parents' Day would be held on November 10, when the annual sports would also be held. The tender of F. Lewis and Son of £55 for renovating the interior of the Boys' High School rectory was accepted. The Director of Education notified that Mr G. V. Wild, Inspector of Technical Schools, had inspected the properties suggested as being suitable for the proposed Boys' High School farm. After discussion in committee, it was decided to defer further consideration till the reserves committee had obtained further information. The Minister for Education, the Hon. R. Masters, advised that he would confer with the board when in Timaru next month. A deputation from the Canterbury Education Board waited on the board with a request that it be granted' use of land adjoining the West School ground as an addition to the recreation area. Mr J. W. Preen stated that by acting as suggested, the Governors would confer a benefit on . the primary school and would not de- ' prive itself of any advantage. He sug- . gested that the board should consider either handing over the property oi selling it, or vesting it in the Educa- \ tion Board for use of the children ol : West School. After discussion it wa; ; decided to inspect the West Schoo! 1 playground before making any de \ cision.
In reply to a letter stating that there was no provision in the High Schools Act for filling a vacancy caused by I the death of a member, the Director of Education, Mr N. T. Lambourne, wrote stating that the board should defer making the appointment of a successor to the late Mrs B. H. "Low until it was seen whether amending legislation would be passed Ihis session. The amendment proposed by the board to reduce i the personnel of the board had been approved by the Minister, and it was hoped thai the necessary legislation would be passed to avoid the necessity of an election in 1935.
The Royal Visit With the object of making arrangements for the reception of his Royal Highness, the Duke of Gloucester to Timaru on January 10, a public meeting was held in the council chambers last night, the Mayor of Timaru, Mr T. W. Satterthwaite, presiding over a good attendance of representatives of local bodies from all parts of South Canterbury and others. The chairman explained that it was intended that the reception should be representative of the whole district. On the motion of Mr G. Dash, it was decided that all schools be circularised to ascertain how many I children would be able to assemble 1 in Timaru under the control of a committee.
The programme, which it was announced had been approved, provided for the Duke of Gloucester to be met at Caroline Bay at 10 a.m. by the Mayor and Town Clerk, Mr E. A. Killick, and driven to Timaru Park, where his Royal Highness will inspect the guard of honour. A civic welcome will be extended and an address will be presented, after which the Royal visitor will open the new park gates. Members of local bodies with their wives will then be presented to his Royal Highness, who will subsequently inspect the returned soldiers and school children, who will sing a verse of the National Anthem. Accompanied by the Mayor, his Royal Highness will be shown points of interest on his way back to Caroline Bay, where he will rejoin the train.
