HEAVY RAIN EXPERIENCED} ! BENEFIT TO DAIRY FARMESB {MBCUI. CO THB 3TSISI.) * NELSON, October 15. The country has received a thotv ough soaking, and dairy farmers every, where are pleased at the wonderful growth of grass. There is abundant growth everywhere. The rain, how-' # * ever, has interfered with the sowing of crops, and some crops are suffering from excessive moisture, especially peas. This season pea growers have had bad luck. The very earliest crops which bring the highest prices were in many cases spoilt by a heavy fall of snow, while the later cropj were rendered worthless by excessive rain. If the present conditions con. tinue, peas will continue to suffer, and, in any case, will probably be poor in quality and high in price, Tomato growers are busy setting out young plants, as weather conditions permit, and these are making good growth. Provided there is not an. other cold snap with a late frost, the crops should make rapid progress, as growing conditions could scarcely be more favourable. What is now required is a spell of warm, sunny weather. The Royal Visit The Nelson Education Board to-day resolved that on the occasion of the Duke of Gloucester's visit to the town i the children should be organised by the local gala committee, in conjunction with any teachers available, and the board will endeavour to have the , children in the country organised at 1 Richmond, Brightwater, and Wake- > field to meet the Duke of Gloucester, who will reach Nelson on January 5. It is regarded as impracticable to brine the children to the town from the country districts, as they would be on holiday. Complaint by Teacher In a letter to to-day's meeting of the Nelson Education Board a teacher at Lyell complained of the condition of New Creek road, which he said was a danger to children who had to travel over the road twice a day. The secretary to the board (Mr H. J. Thornton) said the matter kept cropping up, and the bad condition of the road was due to heavy lorries passing over it continually; lorries should be stopped from going over the road. It was criminal, he said, to endanger the lives* of nine children who had to be taken over it every day. It was resolved strongly to protest to the Minister for Public Works about the dangerous state of the road, and that the Buller County Council should be sent a copy of the teacher's letter. A. and P. Show Considerable interest is being taken in the preparations for the annual agricultural and pastoral show which will be opened by the Governor-Gen-eral, Lord Bledisloe. Canvassers for special prizes reported having met a generous response, over £6O having been given. Mr T. Newman has presented a valuable challenge cup for the best boy rider under 14 at the I show. J Scarcity of Whitebait So far this season whitebait has been scarce in the local rivers, and although there have been one or twt h catches, the season has been distinctly yj' poor.
