♦ RETIREMENT OF RECTOR ANNOUNCED (SPBCUL *0 THE PHESS.) TIMARU, October 15. ■ The announcement of his intention to retire on superannuation from tb« rectorship of Timaru Boys' High School from February 28 next was given verbally at a meeting of the Board of Governors of the school today by Mr William Thomas, M.A. Mr Thomas, in advising the board of his decision, stated that he would make a statement at a later stage, when he submitted his resignation in writing. The resignation was accepted with deep regret. Mr Thomas has been in the teaching profession for 40 years. When he was appointed rector of the Timaru Boys' High School is 1913 there was a roll of 70 scholars. To-day the school has 450 on the roll, and is considered one of the foremost secondary schools outside the four centres. After gaining his M.A. and LL.B. degrees, Mr Thomas underwent training at the Waimate District High School, and was appointed headmaster of the Tawai School. Subsequently he went to the Morven School as headmaster, and later to the Pleasant Point District High School and the Waimataitai School. The Boys' High School has been enlarged considerably since Mr Thomas took charge. It is Mr Thomas's intention to reside in Timaru on his retirement. He has informed the board that he considers it his duly after 40 years of service to give some of the younger members of the profession an opportunity for promotion.
