ROYAL VISIT

« HUGE BALLROOM DANCE IN KING EDWARD BARRACKS SUGGESTED Plans for converting the King Edward Barracks into a huge ballroom were considered by the committee responsible for the civic entertainments during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester to Christchurch in January. It is suggested that a community dance be held in the barracks on January 20. Councillor T. Milliken, who presided at yesterday's meeting, said that nothing final could be arranged at such an early date, and that the plans put before the meeting were purely tentative.

It was proposed that a third of the barrack's ground should be floored for dancing, so giving accommodation for some 2000 dancers. There should also be seating accommodation for a large number of people. Owing to the uneven lie of the ground, the dance floor would be about two feet above the ground at the centre. The plans showed a special platform for his Royal Highness at one side of the dance floor.

It is expected that Derry's Band will play the ordinary dance music, while the Woolston Band will accompany the folk dancers. Present at the committee meeting were Councillors T. Milliken, E. H. Andrews, F. T. Evans, and members of the City Council staff.
