No Lives Lost AMICABLE SETTLEMENT HOPED FOR aKUIiI) PKIS3 ASSOCIATION—BT fXHIHIC XELEGC.U'U— tUI'TKJGUJ.; (Received October 8, 9.20 p.m.) LONDON, October 8. The Angora correspondent of "The Times" says it appears that the French sought permission for the destroyers Cassard and Guepard to visit Constantinople and Smyrna. Turkey granted the former but refused the latter request. Admiral Pivet, commander of the destroyer flotilla, was not aware of the refusal. Coastal 1.-tteries were not employed. The coastguards used rifles only. No lives were lost. The Turkish Government, while protesting against the violation of territorial waters at Smyrna, is exchanging views with the French Embassy in the hope of an amicable settlement.
[A message published yesterday stated: When two French destroyers, the Cassard and the Guepard. were passing through the Gulf of Smyrna, Turkish coastal batteries opened fire on them. The destroyers returned the fire. It is stated that the destroyers were going to Constantinople after a visit to Greek waters, and applied for permission to visit Smyrna. Turkey refused as this is a fortified area. Tne French Embassy is demanding an explanation.!
