GRASS PLOTS ON FOOTPATHS
DISCUSSION BY BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION A meeting of the Christchurch Beautifying Association was held last evening. There were present Messrs R. B. Owen (chairman), H. Tillman (secretary), E. Egglestone, F. Drury, G. W. Bradley, J. Sturrock, and J. E. Yates. Replying to the association's suggestion that grass plots should be formed on the footpaths in Hagley avenue and Harper avenue adjoining the kerbing, the Town Clerk, on behalf of the works committee, wrote that the committee had given consideration to the scheme. The committee considered that if the grass and edgings could be properly maintained the suggestion would be a good one, but as it would be necessary, for some years, at any rate, for the grass to be cut by the hay mower only, it was considered that the appearance would be better maintained by keeping the grass plots close to the park fences, Mr Owen said it was a pity that the works committee had to deal with the scheme. Had it been under the reserves committee it might have been possible to meet the association's suggestion, as mowers could have been used on the grass. It would be one of those improvements which would be appreciated by everyone. He thought the grass would be easier to mow out in tne open. Mr Tillman said the appearance of the city would be greatly improved if all grass on the footpaths and on the sides of the streets were cut with mowers. It was decided to ask the chairman of the works and reserves committees of the City Council to meet a deputation from the association to discuss the suggestions'again. It was decided to write to the superintendent of parks and reserves, asking if a high fence in Banks avenue could be removed.
