BEAUTIFYING THE CITY
♦ RULES OF ASSOCIATION ALTERED PROVISION FOR MORE REPRESENTATION The rules of the Christchurch Beautifying Association were amended last evening to allow the addition on the executive of representatives of societies which include beautifying work in their objects. A notice of motion to that effect, moved by Mr H. Tillman, was carried unanimously. Mr Tillman said that last year the association had found it difficult to organise the garden competition because it did not know where the gardens were. If other associations could be persuaded to organise garden competitions the Beautifying Association's competition could be a "champion of champions." Even if only four or five delegates came the work of the association would be greatly helped, and it would be possible to expand it. Mr E. Egglestone supported the motion, saying that the association could exchange ideas with other associations. Mr E. B. Owen said there was no doubt that there was plenty of work to be done in the suburbs. Mr J. E. Yates said he thought there was a danger that delegates from one suburb might want to spend all the association's money on their particular suburb. It might also lead to serious divisions of opinion. He asked what voting powers outside delegates would have. Mr Owen said the scheme should be given a trial, and then the association could formulate its policy. It was no use asking delegates to come if they were to be bound hand and foot. Mr Yates said he thought outside delegates should not have the same voting powers as members of the association. Their contributions to the discussions, however, would be valuable. Mr Egglestone said it might not be possible to amend the rules again. Mr Owen said very few organisations came within the scope of the motion. The motion was carried unanimously. _____________
