THE FUTURE LIFE CONTENTIONS
• *o IBM «DITOB Or THE PEBS3. Sir,—ln answer to the lines quoted by "J.F.," I should like to give those on a brass in the Cathedral. I think I am right in saying they are by Percy Bysshe Shelley— Ha is not dead, He doth not sleep He hath awakened from the dream of lifo. Yours, etc., — H. October 8, 1934. ,
TO THE KDITOB OF THE I'RISS. Sir,—Canon Perry's contribution in his reported sermon this morning is interesting, showing, as it does, how Christian reasoning has been warped by dogma. I believe that the canon would like to have us believe that a belief in a futuro life had its birth with the birth of Christianity. 1 would like to restate his opening sentence thus—We cannot say where man started to believe in a future life. The mind can be logically led to accept that belief. Our "mental processes" are always overstepping man-made boundaries. When we have attained one step there is always room for faith to help us attain the next. Church leaders arc doing their job when they impress upon us the need for care as to how we spend this life, the habits we form in living and thinking. There is no absolution from the harm we may do, till the "last farthing" has been paid. Yes; great names do carry weight, and modern spiritualism can cite an ever increasing number.—Yours, etc., PETER TROLOVE. October 8, 1934. ,
