RAILWAY CROSSING AT KAIAPOI
♦ DEPUTATION TO MEET RAILWAYS BOARD The installation of a warning device at the railway crossing on the main road at Kaiapoi will be advocated by a deputation which will wait on the Railways Board in Christchurch this month. Arrangements for the deputation are being made by the Canterbury Progerss League, winch is in* viting the co-operation of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) Incorporated, and the Kaiapoi Borough Council. The league has interested itself in the crossing at the request <» the Borough Council. According to present information the board will be in Christchurch on October 19. Complaints about the alleged danger to motorists caused by the crossing have been made to the Railway Department on previous occasions. There is a crossing keeper on duty from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., but after that the crossing is unguarded. It is said by the Borough Council that trains after 9 p.m. are by no means infrequent, particularly in the ewe fair season and when grain is moving. After 9 pjn. trains slow down to six miles an hour before going over the crossing, and it is claimed by the Railway Department that there is no reason for accidents if road users are careful. In spite of these precautions accidents have occurred, and it is claimed that the view of trains approaching from the north is obscured. The deputation will seek the removal of the possibility of danger, preferably by the installation of a warning signal.
