♦ BOISTEROUS WEATHER HEAVY SHOWEKS OF KAIM (BI>»CIAL «0 TB.E MISS.) NELSON, October 2. Yesterday and last night Nelson ex« perienced boisterous conditions, with a. south-westerly wind and heavy rain showers. For the 24 hours up to 9.M to-day, 1.01 inches of rain was registered by the Cawthron Institute, and about a similar amount fell to-day. Heavier falls were experienced in country districts, resulting in the rivers rising to more than half flood, but there was not enough water to do any damage. Yesterday's wind interfered with the telegraph lines on Wangamoa hill, and to some extent with those at South Murchison; but they had been repaired by to-day. Cooler conditions prevailed to-day, when there was a light coating of snow or hail on Jenkins Hill, and quite heavy snow on Maungatapu. The Nelson-Westport main highway is blocked by a slip on the Nelson Mde of the station at Motupiko, and it wnl be necessary for traffic to proceed via Dovedale. Tomato gardeners fear a cold snap, which would threaten thousands of young plants which have been planted outside glasshouses in the last few weeks. Rugby Union At the weekly management committee meeting of the Nelson Rugby Union, the treasurer submitted a financial statement which indicated that. the union would end the year with a loss of about £SO. The club -gateshad increased £4o', compared with the previous year; but representative match takings were down, mainly owing to the wet weather experienced for the home and home matches w.t'a Marlborough. The southern tour resulted in a loss of £4l, which was considered satisfactory in the cirewm. stances. Commenting on the statement, me president (Mr R. J- Eyre), said it had been a satisfactory season financial!y. The accident insurance fund was ;n credit for once, and it was pleasing to feel that with the help of the New Zealand Union it had been possible to hold a most successful Seddon Shield districts' primary school tournament, with a loss of only £4. The championship tables showed tr.e various competition winners to be: Senior, Rivals; junior. Old Boys; third grade, Waimea; fourth grade, College The championship points m the grades were:— Senior—Rivals S3, Nelson 19. Old Boys 14, Pirates 13, Waimea 9, Rovers 4. Junior—Old Boys 18. College lb, Regimental 16, Nelson 10, Rivals 0. Third grade—Waimea 24, College A 20, Nelson 18, Pirates 14, Old Boys 9, Rovers 7, College B 7, Rivals 6. Fourth Grade—College A 21. Nelson 17, College B 11, College C 7, Rivals 0. Road Improvement The Main Highways Board has decided to begin the work of road improvement in the Collins Valley and on the Glenhope side of the Hope Saddle. Unemployment camps for married men will be established, and as far as possible the work will be carried out under the piece-work system. Another unemployment work to bo put in hand immediately is the levelling, returiing, and generally improving of the Nelson Aero Club's ground at Stoke. This work is the outcome of a recommendation by Mr A. E. Gibson, Government aviation officer, following on his inspection of air port sites in Nelson. Life-Saving Society The annual meeting of the Ncl.-oi: Sub-Centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society elected the following officer-: —Patron, Dr. W. D. S. Johnston; president, Mr F. E.
