The Prince this afternoon rowed Princess Marina to a romantic island in the centre of Lake Bled. Here, hand-in-hand, they mounted the 160 steps leading to an ancient chapel, and the Princess tolled the famous wishing bell, which is reputed to make every wish while the bell is tolled come true. The income of Prince Nicolas, her father, since he left Greece, has been mainly from the sale of his mother's jewels. So far the only difference of opinion between Prince George and Princess Marina is that he smokes American cigarettes and she prefers the Jugoslav brand. In a message from Lake Bled, where Prince George and Princess Marina are the guests of Prince and Princess Paul of Jugoslavia, Major H. W. Butler, Prince George's equerry, revealed that the engagement was arranged five days after Prince George's arrival in Jugoslavia, though the Prince had no intention of marrying when he left England.
