Inquest Opened , The inquest on Basil Henry Muller, i married, aged 36 years, who was killed when the motor-truck he was driving ; struck the Ashburton-Chrlstchurch 1 train at Chertsey on Tuesday, was opened before the district coroner (Mr R. Clark)»yesterday and was adjourned sine die after evidence of ; identification had been given by Henry ; Charles Leo Dossett, of Pleasant Point. Acclimatisation Society The monthly meeting of the council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society was held on Tuesday evening, ; when Mr A. O. Pilbrow (chairman) presided. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote asking for information about : the incidence of spoon bill duck in the society's district. The chairman stated that there were considerable numbers of these birds in the back country, and the matter of a reply was left in his hands. The Marine Department wrote advising that the two following regulations had been approved: (1) Bio person shall use for eel-fishing, in the Ashburton river, any torch, acetylene lamp, or other artificial light; (2) no person shall attempt to take or kill any trout, tench, perch, or other acclimatised fish in the Ashburton river, from the Ashburton traffic bridge to the point known as Cairn's crossing, by any means other than artificial bait. The secretary reported that only one opossum trapper's license had been used, and that this man's return for the two months' season was 443 skins.! The chairman reported that as a result of the heavy rain at the end of last week the hatchery creek had been flooded and a very serious loss suffered. It was decided to replenish the boxes with rainbow trout ova, which could be procured from Lake Alexandria. Golf Club Ball Arrangements are well in hand for the annual ball of the Ashburton Golf Club, to be held on September 6, and the function is expected to be the foremost in Ashburton this season. A number of interesting novelties have been introduced and include a gipsy ballet by women members of the club, a humorous sketch and a ballet by Miss G. Bushell's pupils. A band of eight instruments will play the music. Arrangements are being made to admit spectators to the circle of the theatre. CHERTSEY There was a large attendance at the fortnightly social and card evening, held by the Chertsey Hall Committee. The card tournament was controlled by Mr Andrew Doig. The women's prize was won by Mrs Cox with Mrs Andrew Doig second. Mr T. Flynn won the men's prize with Mr W. Cain second. Music for dancing was played by iVlrs W. Cain, Misses N. McKimmie, and M. Redman, and Mr J. Behrns. Mr Alan Doig was master of ceremonies. I ! METHVEN A dance was held in the Anglican Hall, Methven, on Tuesday evening as a send-off to the members of the Methven Ladles' Hockey Club, who are taking part in the Dominion ladies' hockey tournament at Christchurch. There was a good attendance, including Messrs E. Davidson and W. C. Bishop, president and secretary respectively of the Ashburton Ladies' Hockey Association, and Miss Amy Loach, captain of the representative team. Music for the dance was played by Cook's orchestra, an extra being played by Miss Scoon. Mr W. Dolan was master of ceremonies. At a suitable interval, Mr Davidson congratulated the Methven players, Misses T. Williams, E. Cleeve, M. Owen, P. Dalton, and S. Law, on their inclusion In the representative team and wished them success in the tournament. Mrs Johns, president of the Methven Ladies' Hockey Club, presented each of the players with a useful gift. She also asked Mr W. J, Owen to accept a small gift as a token of appreciation of his services to the club. Miss E. Cleeve replied on behalf of the recipients. The players will leave for Christchurch to-morrow morning, and will play their first match on Saturday afternoon. The following players will represent the club at the Ashburton Ladies' Hockey Association's six-a-side tournament on Saturday:—Seniors: Misses L. Watson, M. Ayers, Betty Morgan, M. Cretney, E. Cretney, and H. Williams; emergency, T. Miller. Junior No. 1; Misses J. Kilworth (captain), N. Ayers, Gwen Owen, O. Williams, J. Cleeve, N. Williams. Junior No. 2: Misses D. Bonnington, H. Paterson, R. Street (captain), D. Owen, J. McRobie, J. Newman; emergency, J. Lawson. RAKAIA At the monthly meeting of the Rakaia Band of Hope Mr S. Wilson presided over a good attendance. The programme, which was arranged by the members of the Young People's Christian Temperance Union, comprised songs by Doreen Pluck and Miss Hazel McGeorge, piano solos by Misses Edna Kidd. Hazel McGeorge, and June Saunders, recitations 'by Misses June Saunders, Betty Crossley, and Pamela Martin; dialogues, "Keeping Out the Cold" and "Sixpence," by the Y members; song in Maori, the Rev. W. E. Moore; company songs by the Y members. Accompaniments were played by Miss E. Kidd and Mr Moore.
