"SILENCE NIGHT" IN LONDON

♦- new regulations now IN FORCE ■p.i;n imi orvici.M. «i»*;i,r.vr (Received August 20, 9.50 p.m.) RUGBY, August 23. Londoners are referring to last night as ."silence night," for the Ministry of Transport's order forbidding the blowing of motor horns within an area of five miles of Charing Cross came into force half an hour before midnight. For the time being the police have instructions only to warn those who contravene the order, but public opinion is strongly supporting the efforts to make nights quiet for those who sleep in the area. It is not only hooters that will be dealt with by the Ministry. Officials are considering measures to prevent the thoughtless slamming of motor doors and to discourage clattering gearboxes and roaring exhausts. Police reports indicate that the experiment last night was generally successful. There was remarkably little hooting, though one effect was a considerable slowing-down of traffic, motorists cornering slowly, and using their headlights as signals. London hospitals especially benefited.
