The annual meeting of the Geraldine ! Prcsbvterian Church was held in the | Sunday School, the Rev. W. J. Coul- I ing presiding over a large attendance j of members. In the annual report the i managers recorded a year of progress, although the expenditure in the gen- ; eral account was still in excess of the j revenue, there being a deficiency of | £27 10s. The Deacon's Court appealed to all members and adherents for their ] whole-hearted support, so that the | budget could be balanced and the j church placed upon a sound ilnancial footing. At the last annual meeting, I it had. been decided to add Messrs D. I Pi-ingle, J. Grierson, P. F. Russell, J. | S. Clvne L. J. Bennington, C. S. i Da vies, J. Ewart, 11. Russell. C. Borrell. 11. McKcnzie, H. J. Bowkett, and G. Friend to the Deacon's Court and their inclusion had proved beneficial. During the year it had been decided to make the canvass for the stipend fund half-yearly, and a thorough canvass by the collectors had resulted in an increase in the fund of £B2 5s 7d. The special effort collection showed a slight decrease on last year's figures. The present indebtedness was £231 16s 4d, and the Deacon's Court had decided that the time was opportune to make a special endeavour to pay this amount oIT. A committee had been appointed to approach members of the congregation and appeal to them to take up interest free debentures of £lO each to redeem this debt. The Ladies' Association was still very active and had proved its value by its concentration on the improvement of the finances and its general work for the material welfare of the church. An improvement had been the raising of the choir platform and the curtained railing. The grounds and property of the church were in good order, the ground committee taking an active interest in the matter. The managers ! wished to thank all members and adherents for their generous support, and all those who have assisted in any way, particularly the choir under the leader (Mr A. A. Readdie), and the organist (Mr C. S. Davies), the Sabbath school and Bible Class teachers, the treasurer, the various collectors, and the women I for their floral decorations. Other rc--1 ports were read from the various Sun- : day schools and Bible classes, all ol I which proved that the branches of the church were progressing satisfactorily. Miss Cora Flatman read a report of the work done by the members and adherents of the Woodbury Church during the last five years. All the reports were adopted. The financial statement showed that the revenue totalled £499 19s sd, and the expenditure was £527 9s sd, leaving a deficit of £27 10s on the year's working.

FAIRLIE 'L'hc annual reunion of the Mackenzie Sub-Branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association was held at Fairlie. Mr J. Cunneeii, president, presided. He extended a welcome to Messrs Hinchev, Davis, and McLeod from Timaru" and to Mr Geo. Murray, chairman of the Mackenzie County Council A long toast list was honoured and a number of vocal and instrumental items were enjoyed. In responding to the toast of the "South Canterbury Returned Soldiers' Association," Mr Hinchey gave an outline of what the association had already accomplished on behalf of returned soldiers. It was more necessary now than ever for the returned men to stick together. The speaker appealed to all to join up and enable the association to obtain help for men whose health is failing In reply to the toast of the "Mackenzie County Council," Mr Geo. Murray, said that the council had always clone its best to help the returned men and unemployed generally. From now on, it woitld be the council's policy to see that the unemployed would be paid nothing less than the standard rate of wage. A programme of instrumental and vocal items was given, those contributing being Messrs F. Smith, F. Geany, T. Mayne, D. Grant, R. Creighton, J. Dick, and W. O'Brien. Mr T. Smith was accompanist. Those present joined in singing a number of the v/ar-time songs.

TEMUKA Miss E. L. Grigg (manager), Mr J. C. Hayhurst (president of the South Canterbury Basketball Association), and the Temuka members of the South Canterbury basketball team have returned from Dunedin. Mr T. G. Beck, Public Works irrigation engineer, has returned to Temuka from Wellington. Mr and Mrs A. A. Croy, of Brookside are staying with Mr and Mrs A. McCallum, Allnutt street. _ „„„ Mr and Mrs W. Tindall, Raynor street have left for Christchurch. Mr and Mrs W. L. Harrison have returned from a visit to Dunedin. Mr K. Blyth, who has been spendin- his annual leave in Dunedin, returned to Temuka yesterday. Captain James Allfrey presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Temuka Volunteer Fire Brigade, held on Tuesday evening. The Borough Council advised that the brigade's request Jo have a portion of frontage at the fire station prepared for the planting of shrubs had been agreed to. The United Fire Brigades' Association advised that there was no tax payable on sleeping quarters by volunteer firemen unless they messed at the station. It was agreed to procure a red headlight for the fire engine. It was decided to communicate with the secretary of the United Fire Brigades* Association about compiling a list of old members of the Temuka brigade, for the diamond jubilee celebrations. At the annual meeting of the lemuka Bowling Club, Mr H. B. Strange presided over a, large attendance. Messrs A. C. Palmer and M. Giles were elected new members. Written resignations were received from Messrs V O'Connor and T. Snow, and these i were referred to the committee toi deal with. The twenty-eighth annual report stated that the last season had been very successful, and it was conlidentlv anticipated that the membership w"ould increase this year. In the women's section there had been a big increase in membership. The club competitions had resulted as follows: Singles, T. Edwards; pairs (Cooper Shield)', M. Brosnahan and W. J. Keys- rinks (Brown Cup), A. McCallum G. Huncox, W. L. Harrison, and T Edwards (si; B grade singles, M. Brosnahan; colts, W. Shnnd. The club entered teams in the Thursday and Saturday South Canterbury competitions and won the Thursday section. The report concluded by thanking all who assisted the club. The treasurer ('Mr R. H. Taylor) submitted the bal-ance-sheet, wlirtch disclosed a credit of £1 7s 4d. Commenting on the financial position, Mr Taylor said that this was the first time in many years that the club had shown u credit balance. Mclnnes) reported that a new electric mower had been purchased, and It, had been decided to procure a spiked roller and a new light rotter. After the season closed about 18,000 plugs of beach weed had been planted in the bare ends of the green, and these had become well established. The sum of two i guineas was voted to the curator of j the domain, and one guinea to the former curator, Mr A. E. Uden. An- ! nual subscriptions were fixed as follows:—Members £2, new members £1 ss. It was agreed I that the lime had arrived when the women's section should form into a ' .separate club, and manage its ov.'n I affairs: that the women's club should ] be charged 10s for each player, for | the use of the green, and that play I should be conlhicd to Mondays, Tucsi days, Wednesdays, and Fridays, until 5 p.m.. holidays excepted. It was agreed, on the motion of Mr W. L. Harrison, that the green supervisor should be an cx-officio member of the committee.

At the annual meeting of the Temuka Bowling Club, a letter was received from the Temuka Domain Board advising that a new schedule of duties had been drawn up for the curator. Sports clubs reauiring the assistance of the curator or his assistant to work on public holidays must make their own arrangements with the staff for this work. A record of all time spent on the various club's grounds, either with work or supervising, would be kept, and the charges made to each of the clubs concerned would be reviewed at the end of the year. If at any time the labour required to maintain sports grounds cost more than the rent, an adjustment would have to be made. The meeting approved of the conditions laid down. The general stand down week Is being observed by relief workers in Temuka, and unemployed returned soldiers have resumed work on the final week of the wood-cutting scheme under the direction of the Returned Soldiers' Association. About 60 men are at work on the Hae-Hae-Te-Moana riverbed, near- Mr McCullough's property, and as each man is allowed to cut eight cords, nearly 500 cords will be available at the end of (ha week.

WINCHESTER Mrs A. J. Stone-Wigg and Mr J. L. Stone-Wigg, Waihi School, are spending a few days in Dunedin. Mr G. B. Orbell, of the Christchurch Hospital staff, is spending a holiday with his parents, Mr and Mrs L. H. Orbell, Winchester. Miss M. Moore is leaving to spend a holiday with her sister, Mrs A. G. Hart, Rosewill.
