Relief of Distress A total, of 71i applications were dealt with by the Mayor's Relief of Distress Committee this week. School Holidays Primary and secondary schools in the Grey district commenced the second term holidays yesterday. The secondary .schools will resume work on Tuesday, September 11. and the primary schools a week earlier. Blaketown School The advisability of raising the Blaketown School ;;rade, up to the fourth standard, from the second, was discussed at a special meeting of the Blaketown and Preston Road Ratepayers' Association. Mr J. McGirr presided. The secretary read ;i letter sent to the Main School Committee proposing the change as in the best interests of the children who had a long distance to walk 1o the Main School during the winter months. A reply from the school committee asked that, (he association should send a deputation to the next committee meeting. It was decided after much discussion to advise the Main School Committee that there was no information further to that contained in the first letter to be sent them, and that, therefore, a deputation was considered unnecessary. It was decided also that the West Coast School Committees' Association should be written to in the matter, and copies of the letters sent to the member for Westland, Mr J. O'Brien, and the Canterbury Education Board. The attitude of the Grey Main School Committee was discussed at length, members slating' that, at the first request the school committee had regarded the clrmge favourably, but at its next meeting had been "all at sixes and sevens."' T. Lalor, P. Minchan, J, Autheman, E. Bullimore. Obituary The death occurred on Friday morning of Mr Thomas Scott, manager at Grcvmouth of Beath and Company, Ltd. Mr Scott had been in il-health for some weeks. He was 52 years old. A native of Otago, he had been in the drapery trade for many years. He was a keen follower of Rugby football, and for many years was a member of the executive of the West Coast Rugby Union. He leaves a widow and one son. Rugby Football In Hie linn! of the senior Rutby competition, plaved at Rugby Park to-day. United beat Blakrtown by 14 points to 0 after an exciting game. The first, half was even, both of backs going well, but the Untied forwards wore down the opposition right through the second half. The game provided the brightest club football seen this season. Getting possession of the ball hi the first two minutes, the Blaketown backs went away in a brilliant run, Negri cutting in beautifully to gam much ground. Gilbert sived for United with a fine line kick. Another splendid back movement by the Blaketown backs was checked when Gilbert took a good mark. United backs took their turn at attacking, but Weir on the wins was forced out before the movement could accomplish much. Tho United forwards in rucking well maintained the offensive, and a penalty in a handy position gave Gilbert the opportunity to open United's score. United 3. Blaketown 0. The United backs, with Weir and Schroder combining brilliantly, passing and in-pass-ing, again forced the play into Blaketown territory. Bunt saved for Blaketown with a good kick. Garth worked the blind side cleverly to let Elder away for Blaketown, and in a fine solo run the Blaketown winger went, well into United territory. Halftimo came jusl after Weir had forced

The second half opened with United taking the offensive, the forwards working play almost to the Blaketown line. M. A spectacular and sudden passing rush by the Blaketown backs, with Bunt putting in a solo run, put the United line in danger. Good tackling checked the rush, I but the Blaketown forwards carried on the work. The play was changing | rapidly at this stage, both sets of backs working as prettily as at any time this season. A fast sprint down the side-line let Schroder away for United, | but Bunt got him with a flying tackle. United forwards pressed again. A scrum ensued near the Blaketown line, and United got the ball. United forwards, headed by Jamieson and Rathbun, went away again in a rush that was only checked within a few yiwds of the Blaketown line. The forwards kept up the pressure and Eric Jones, picking up in a ruck, went over under the posts. Gilbert converted. United 11, Blaketown 0. After a spell of Blaketown attack, Caldwell, on the wing for United, put in a determined run down the side-line. He was well tackled by R. Olsen and the play came back to midfleld. United came away on attack again, bth backs and. forwards combining to dribble to the Blaketown line, where Collins went over for a good try. The game ended with the scores: United 14, Blaketown 0. Severe Wind The wind was so severe yesterday morning that many residents wertt awakened by the sound of falling objects and breaking glass. Several windows were either blown in or smashed by some flying object—in one case the branch of a tree —while a branch of one of the Cass square trees was broken off, bringing down the clectria wires in Stafford street. At Cass square, in the first rrame of the senior knock-out competition for the Ford Cup, Excelsior beat Pirates by 13 points to 0. Tries were scored by Tainui, Muir, and Connolly, while Hughes cpnverted two. Mr A. Cutbush Was referee.
