CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING
CANTERBURY TITLES RACES IN THE MUD AT CASHMERE Paddocks under water or several inches deep in mud were crossed by a field of 60 runners on Saturday in the Canterbury cross-country championship at Cashmere. Times under these conditions were slow, but the race for the first six or seven places was as interesting as any there has been in several seasons. A. D. Park, captain of the Baptist Club's team, left the rest of the field on the hills to win comfortably by 200 yards from G. H. Watson (Christ- ' churchi and VV. G. Taylor (Timaru). The Baptist team took the inter-club title from Christchurch with an easy win from a fairly weak teams field, the teams championship thus changing hands for the first time since the war. Taylor and Park were together most of the way. with Watson in third place, but after the water jump the race went I much as it did last year, Taylor falling back on the hills to third place and Park going on to win nlniost as he pleased in 38min 46sec. Watson ran as consistently as ever to take second place for the fourth year in succession. His time was 30rnm 2(hcf. The Baptist team had things to itoelf in the teams championship, with 2t points, and Timaru moved up to ~ecoud place with. 40. Christchurch was third with 55. University had its chances ruined by the Joss of one of its first two men, but it did fairly well in finishing fourth with 62 points. Presbvterian A was fifth and Anglican packed well in sixth place. Few Surprises Again this year thare were comparatively few surprises. Park was expected to win comfortably enough, and Watson to finish second. Taylor's form was doubtful, but his run into third place for the second year in succession was not unexpected. G. S. Harrison (Baptist) ran according to form in fourth place. The chief surprise was C H. Malthews's performance. He was well up after the first half of the distance, and finished strongly in fifth place, ahead of L. E. Fox (University). T Bartlett (Christchurch) was a surprise in ninth place, and R. Taylor (Timaru) in twelfth, but places went as they were expected most of the way down the field. The course started from the Old Stone House on the Cashmere Estate. and took the zunners over five miles of flat country in Hoon Hay and towards Halswcll before turning on to the hills, over two climbs, and back along the fiat again. All the clubs m the centre were represented, 11 teams entering and nine finishing. The weather was cold, but there was no rain during the race to add to the difficulty of the conditions. Kace Described The field remained well bunched for the first mile, over road and boggy country, with Taylor and A. B. Smith (Baptist) leading. Park had come up with Taylor at the cross-roads, with Harrison five yards a'way, and A. B. Smith and Watson another five yards back, followed by Fox, Charlesworth (Presbyterian). Bartlett, Matthews, and L. D. J. Smith (University). From there the field went north along the road for a short distance and turned across fairly firm land, over a ditch, and across ploughed land on to Sparks's road. Here Park and Taylor were still running together, with Watson ;;nd Harrison about 20 yards back. The same order was retained with a similar distance separating the runners to the poplars, two miles further on, where the field turned towards the water jump. The ord'r after Watson and Harrison here was Matthews, 100 yards ahead of Fox, followed by Charlesworth and Bartlett. Park began to draw away just before the water jump, where he was 20 yards ahead of Taylor, with Watson still third, CO yards back. On the hills Park raced away to win as he pleased by 200 yards. Watson also went well on the hills, and passed Taylor on the last ciinib, leading him in with about 30 vards to spare. Detailed results: - Individual Championship A. 1). ROGERS SUCCESSFUL AGAIN The Canterbury junior championship was run on Saturday over a course of a little more than four miles at Cashmere, within tfi-: senior one. R. Rogers (Cliristchurch). who won (he title when it was first contested last season, led a strong field home again to ■ win with 150 yards to spare. A teams' championship was introduced for the first time and was won jointly by Methodist and Christchurch. The junior course included the same hill country as that used for the senior events, but it cut out the first mile and a quarter on the flat and also a triangular section shortly before the water jump. It was to have been five miles, but times indicate that it was shorter. A field of 23 started, representing seven clubs, and good time was made under the difficult conditions. Rogers covered the course in 2(smin 57sec, and the second man, E. Bissett (Baptist), in 27min 46sec. Detailed results: — Individual Championship ft.
